Transport & activities

Hi there, we (my partner and I) are coming from Sydney to Wollongong on 16th April for me to attend a conference. I will be in talks all day on 17th, 18th and half of 19th. So we have the second half of the 19th and first half of 20th to explore the Gong together and also the 16th depending on how early we get there. My partner will have the entire time to explore, while I am in the talks. We fly home on 20th April 6.30pm. Do you think it would be a good idea to hire a car, or is public transport frequent and regular? Would it be cheaper to drive from Sydney or get the train? and if we drive do we have to keep the car the whole time, or can we drop it off at W'gong? Does anyone have any idea of what we could do together to get the most out of the short bits of time that I will have?

Thanks so much!

To do much in the way of sightseeing I would think you would need to hire a car to explore the surrounding areas..Kiama, Kangaroo Valley & the Southern Highlands..

I guess in terms of cost, you'll have to sort out what you want to do..the train would be cheaper than car to get there, but then you'd needa taxi to your accomodation...

While my hubby attended a conference in Wollongong, my daughter and I enjoyed the sights by relying on a rental car. Highlights were the various beaches, Symbio Zoo and the rainforest. (Kiama was a bit of a dud with no surf and hence, no blowhole action.)

We especially enjoyed our drive through Royal National Park and along the coast after arriving at Sydney's airport. As I recall, Wollongong's train station is a bit far from the hotel scene, so you would have to take a taxi if you rely on the train.
