South Island Itinerary

Hi.

Just planning our girls trip and after some feedback on the following itinerary. We are going in March. Mainly just want to relax, some wineries....

Day 1: Fly into Queenstown. Night one in Queenstown.

Day 2: Drive from Queenstown to Christchurch via Lake Tekapo. Night two in Christchurch.

Day 3: Drive to Blenheim. Nights three and four in Blenheim

Day 4: Winery tour

Day 5: Ferry to Wellington. Night 5 in Wellington

Day 6: Fly from Wellington to Queenstown. Nights 6 and 7 in Queenstown

Day 7: Winery tour

Day 8: Fly home.

I know the drive from Queenstown to Christchurch will be a full day but that is ok. We will stop and do some sight seeing on the way. Any suggestions of other things to see on the way?

Thanks

Have you already booked your flights? Why not fly home from WLG?

Day 2 is not sensible. If you don't want to visit QTN (????) why not fly into CHC?

With this itinerary you need 2 separate rental cars. Why not start with 2-3 N in QTN:

Day 1: Fly into Queenstown.

Day 2: Winery tour; adventure activities

Day 3: Break the journey somewhere like Mt Cook (recommended) or Lake Tekapo

Day 4: Drive to Chch

Day 5: Drive to Blenheim (2N). Don't miss Waipara vineyards & Peter Yealand's vineyard at Seddon enroute

Day 6: Winery tour

Day 7: Ferry to Wellington

Day 8: Fly home (worst case scenario & you've already bought tickets - fly back to ZQN & home)

I don't understand the logic of driving huge distances to then fly back where you started.

Best plan a more leisurely drive one way to then fly home.

Z's plan is a good one.

Sorry, should have mentioned that the flights have been booked already.

Thank you for the itinerary changes: will forward that to the rest of the group to look at!

Also, we don’t have to go up to the top of the South Island. I am playing around with ideas so open to any suggestIons!

mimejustinebayan, please do not hijack somebody else's thread. Just post your own question using the "Ask a question" button. Do check a map before you repost as your current day 5 is not possible. There is no secret tunnel between FG & Mt Cook!

Sydfamily, Are the wineries important? You could spend those 2N allowed to Blenheim in Wanaka or at Mt Cook! if you don't have to go to Wellington why not add a night in Chch (day 5 on my itinerary).

There are heaps of wineries along the Gibbston Valley. There are also many wineries at Bannockburn, about an hour away.

There's also a smaller wine region north of Christchurch known as Waipara:
