Overnight vs. Day Cruise

My husband and I are planning a cycling trip around the South Island and we are trying to decide what to do in Milford Sound. We will be cycling in from either Te Anau Downs or most likely the Divide. We want to do a cruise, but aren't sure whether to stay at the Lodge and cruise the next day or to catch one of the overnight cruises. Either way, we will take a bus back to Queenstown. Any suggestions?

I think you will just love the overnight cruise. The peace and serenity of being out on the water with just stars overhead is magical. And the kayaking is wonderful too.

Don't forget your insect repellent. The sandflies can be fierce and they always enjoy a moving target.

You trip sounds fabulous, enjoy :)

Ditto what Wanaka Lakes said. I just returned from a New Zealand trip and our Milford Sound overnight cruise was a highlight. Wildlife, scenery, silence, the southern skies. Not to be missed!

We did the overnight trip on the Mariner 2 years ago and it was magic. We loved being on the water in the kayaks so much that we returned this year & stayed at Milford Lodge in one of the new chalets and the following day we went kayaking for 5 hours on Milford Sound. We had dolphins come up right beside us & one swam under our kayak. It was one of the highlights of our trip. That's another option you could consider. The beauty of it is that you just about have the place to yourself whereas on the day trips you share it with hoardes of people.

Who did you use for your overnight trip? Do you recall the approximate departure times from Queenstown and the return time? Cost? Thanks so much.

The Mariner is operated by Real Journeys. The boat departs at 4.30pm and returns around 9.30am. We drove our rental car from Queenstown so not sure what time the bus departs. For current prices and more information check out their website.
