1 night in Christchurch or stay in Queenstown? Advice please

HI all,

we are spending 5 nights in Queenstown and surrounds over New year/Early Jan. Flights from QT to Brisbane are incredibly expensive the day of our departure and one alternative is to fy from QT to Christchurch and spend the night there before flying home. Its a saving of about $500 if we do it.

Im reading the forums etc and getting mixed thoughts on the value of coming to Christchurch for less than 24 hrs, given the situation with the city centre and half day tours etc Im unsure of the best place to stay also. We enjoy outdoor exercise, good food, wineries and nature based stuff.

Can anyone give me their thoughts on this idea and are we really just better to stay in QT and pay up :)

Thanks

I'd def recommend staying in CHC to save $500! There is still quite a lot to see, including the botanic gardens, punting on the Avon, cycle tours through Hagley Park, even a visit to our newly famous Pop-up "shipping mall". In the absence of hotels, look for motels in the Riccarton Rd or Papanui Rd areas or try Parkview on Avon or Pavillions for more upmarket.

Oops, sorry that hotel should be Parkview on Hagley!

Hi zhuhai, thanks thats helpful - what is punting on the avon?

Are those areas closer to the city or the airport?

Midway in between, about 10-15 minutes by taxi or shuttle.

Punting is a relaxing trip by flat bottomed boat (a punt), made famous at Cambridge, UK. The boat is propelled by a pole pushing against the bottom of shallow rivers. In Chch the trip takes you into the beautiful Botanic Gardens.

Ok thanks alot...flight prices have changed today but travelling home via Christchurch is still looking favourable...I love photography so the Botanic Gardens would be great for a few hours.

It's a short walk (10 mins) from the Gardens to the new Restart Mall and the oportunity to get some more excellent photos and a feeling for the destruction of the Quake. There are not many places you can see that sort of thing. The cordon is reducing all of the time as the more dangerous buildings are removed.

I would be inclined to do the "Mall bit" first, then walk down to the gardens and the Avon.

Also, if you like walking, you can follow the river from the Botanical gardens carpark area, and continue around Hagley Park. It's lovely for walking at the moment, and if you do go into the city, it's a soothing contrast to the 'broken bits' (which although challenging, are probably good to see to give a perspective of what has happened, and provide a different kind of photography experience.)
