3 nights in Wellington - where and what

As a part of our 15 days through North Island, we'll be spending 3 nights in Wellington (coming from Napier) at the very end of our NZ trip.

We're leaving for Auckland on December 31 and fly back to Vancouver on the same day.

My questions are:

- where to stay

- what to do with two kids (8 and 11)

We'll have a car. Would you recommend keeping it all days while in the city or not?

Thanks a lot!

There is obviously the main tourist attractions like Te Papa, Museum of Wellington, Mt Victoria, the cable car up to Kelburn, Botanical Gardens, Carter Observatory.

A drive around the Miramar Peninsula and the south coast is quite scenic. The Weta Workshop (Lord of the RIngs) is in Miramar.

You could get rid of the car if you are spending time in the central city.

Hi

Wellington is a very compact city and most places of interest in the city centre are within walking distance. When we visit Wellington we never bother with a car.

You may also wish to consider a visit to Zealandia - Karori Wildlife Reserve

Thank you.

Something around Wellington? Something to include in a day trip?

Thanks.

If you are coming from Napier you could go through the Wairarapa and stop at the Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre. There is also Cape Palliser which has a large seal colony, and the Putangirua Pinnacles.

Kapiti Island north of Wellington has great birdlife but you will need to book DOC permits in advance and is weather dependent.

There are also walks up Mt Kaukau, around Makara Beach, the Orongorongo valley.

You probably won't need a car in Wellington - as others have said it's a very compact city. Also the public transport network is very good.

A nice (and easy to organise) day trip would be to catch the ferry to Eastbourne / Days Bay where there are good cafes and a lovely beach. There's a great walk out along the coast to the Wellington heads.

There's plenty to see and do in Wellington - you shouldn't have too much trouble filling three days. Te Papa is great for the kids and there's a lot of coast to explore - hiring kayaks on the waterfront is a good options (depending on ages etc).

With regard to accommodation, I'm not sure what your budget is but there are loads of options. Check out www.wotif.com for ideas.
