South Island Road Trip 9 Days, is this possible?

Hello! I am planning a late March vacation to the South Island for about 9 days. We will be renting a car and staying in hostels for the majority of the trip. Is it feasible to start in Queenstown, drive up the west coast then to Nelson and then back to Queenstown in 9 days? Keep in mind we are on a budget! Thank you in advance!

Hello TB :)

If you don't mind driving 5 or 6 hours per day, every day, you could;

1 arrive Queenstown

2 drive to Franz Josef

3 drive to Punakaiki

4 drive to Nelson

5 drive to Kaikoura

6 drive to Akaroa

7 drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook

8 drive to Queenstown

9 fly home

This is not a holiday I would recommend. Far better to explore in and around Queenstown, including Milford Sound, Arrowtown, Wanaka.

happy planning :)

Why are you doing the in/out ZQN route? - far cheaper to do the same circuit in/out CHC!!

Whichever way you go, I would recommend the min-circuit - QTN-Glaciers-Arthurs Pass-Mt Cook - Wanaka - Te Anau-Milford Sound-Te Anau- Queenstown as maximum driving for a 9 day trip.
