We will be travelling in the North Island over the easter weekend. Will shops etc. be open?
Generally, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, a lot of shops will be closed as they are not legally allowed to open.
In theory, bars are not allowed to serve alcohol on Good Friday, but I think they are allowed to if you order food (funny archiac law). You just need to check in whatever town you are in, as the enforcement of this law varies a little bit from place to place.
Some shops will be open for some time over those 2 days, but depends exactly where you are as to what is open.
Easter Saturday is a normal trading day.
Generally, tourism related activities should be operating.
See this link for more detail on what is legally allowed to be open/sold:
Also note that most shops will be closed Easter Monday morning until 1pm as this year ANZAC day falls on Easter Monday (25 April 2011).
