Arepeace, visiting either city for 3 or 4 day won't show you the essence of NZ.

Of the two, Auckland probably offers more within close proximity.

However if you are adding these few days onto a visit to Australia then I suggest you might consider skipping NZ this time. It is a large expense of money and airport time to come for just a few days. These extra days might be more productively used in Oz.

Hope this helps, happy planning :)

We may be close neighbours and best friends but it is still a border to cross. Just the flying over, passports MAF inspections, drive to aiport cost you a day!

We were thinking of coming over from Brisbane towards the end of our two week trip to your end of the world. We'd have 5 full days in NZ and after seeing the posted comments here I wanted to know if you thought that was too short of an amount of time to come over. Haven't decided yet where in NZ we'd like to go. Thanks guys.

gets a little windy ;-)

of the 2 choices, on a short timetable, I would go Auckland.

Can still do quick trips to Coromandel or Bay of Islands.

Hello G, you may get more replies if you begin a new thread :)

But to answer your question... 5 full days in NZ is doable. I suggest you fly in/out of Queenstown. You will find stunning scenery and lots of activities to easily fill your time.

Happy planning :)

If you can go straight to the South Island I think that's reasonable. Queenstown puts you in the heart of the fantastic NZ scenery, Christchurch is within reach of Kaikoura, Akaroa, Arthurs Pass, even the west coast or Mt. Cook, within your time frame. And it has the advantage of easy access to the airport, you might even fly to Queenstown.

Auckland is disadvantaged by the time needed to get to and from and thru the airport, and really there isn;t all that much to do there for tourists, sorry to say (having spent the better part of a week there recently).

I think the answer to you question is probably "neither" as New Zealand is not somewhere one comes to for our cities and to "discover/explore" New Zealand is not of course possible.

Christchurch is very pleasant city but the Auckland Region (say within an hour to an hour and a half of the city centre) has far more to see and do and a greater diversity. You could certainly get a good taste of New Zealand in the Auckland region.

While I also think that the best of NZ is not found in the cities, I have to agree with LoneKauriLodge and say that Auckland does give you a pretty good taster.

Mlgb, there is heaps to do for tourists in Auckland, you just need to know where to look.

Beyond the more obvious touristy things (e.g. sailing, the bridge climb, Sky City, Kelly Tarltons etc etc), a person with a car can travel out to the wider reaches of Auckland and discover many hidden gems from great beaches to fantastic bushwalks. Auckland has wonderful regional parks and some of the really pretty ones down South (e.g Hunua and Awhitu) are barely touched by tourists. The Waitakeres are also worth a visit followed by lunch at one of the many great country cafes out towards Kumeu.

A wine lover could take a tour to Waiheke or North to Matakana. Or, if you're pressed for time, but want to get out of Auckland, you could always take a day cruise from downtown Auckland across to the Coromandel (it's considerably closer by boat), or perhaps a day long coach tour down to Waitomo.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I say if you're keen to come to NZ for a quick visit, then you should do it. Make hay while the sun shines, so to speak :-)
