driving distance advice please

Hi

We have a fantastic itinerary for trip round both islands.

Just one question- Te Anau-route 94 to route 6 North to Cromwell- via Omarama-Twizal (detour along Pukaki Canal)route 80 to Mt Cook (glentanner holiday park) can anyone advise me the length of time driving this route?

The best site I use for distances and times is 'google maps', type in point of origin and point of destiantion in the 'get directions' box and its all there. for places in between , just drag the pointer.

maps.google.co.nz/maps…

It'll probably take about 6 hours. Are you travelling in a camper? if so it will take a bit longer. Good roads and easy driving the whole way.

You could try doing a stpoover in Wanaka to break up the journey.

:) In case you hadn't gathered we're very parochial Down Under but in AVL's defence Wanaka would be an ideal stopover point.

7. Re: driving distance advice please

Hi

Now that I have been advised 6 hr+ drive would I be better to:-

Te Anau - Wanaka, stay overnight

Wanaka - Mt Cook, stay overnight

Mt Cook- Lake Tekapo, stay overnight

Lake Tekapo- Christchurch?

Please note we will already have travelled down the West Coast towards Queenstown and this will be the return journey to Christchurch. (I am trying to split up the journey)

Please can someone also recommend holiday park in Wanaka to stay with campervan.

The other option if we drive direct from Te Anau to Mt Cook is the same as above (obviously no overnight in Wanaka)but:-

Lake Tekapo - Geraldine

Geraldine - Christchurch

Please advise is shorter drive and Wanaka better than long drive and Geraldine?

many thanks

Hi Jules,

Tekapo to Mount Cook is only about 1 hours drive, so why not stop 2 nights in Tekapo rather than at Glentanner.

There are 3 campsites in Wanaka - Wanaka Holiday Park which is in easy walking distance of the town centre (about a couple of minutes), and you get mountain and some lake views. The facilities are a bit dated but the closeness to the town makes up for it. The Top Ten which is on Mount Aspiring Road - it would take about 30 - 45 minutes to walk into town from there depening on your fitness level, but it is a flat walk and takes you along the lake if you wish. The Site is nearly opposite the Rippon Vineyard that do wine tastings...yum! The third is Glendhu Bay, again the facilities are a bit dated but the lakeside location and views are unsurpassed. I believe you can hire motor boats from the site (or at least you used to be able to) so you could chug into town by lake, or drive which takes about 15-20 minutes. The advantage of this one is that it is closer to the Mt Aspiring National Park, so if walking and scenery is your thing, then this would be the one to stop at. I would advise booking Glendhu if you are coming in the Summer school hols (mid December to about 7th Feb) as the site gets full with Kiwi families taking a 6 week break.
