Help finding affordable suburb in Perth

My husband and I are considering a move to Perth from Canada as his company has a head office in Perth as well (Cameco), The office is located in West Perth (Hay street to be exact).

I am noticing housing is quite expensive in that area. We are looking for advice on a more affordable suburb to rent in that would be 40 min or less of a commute with public transportation. Any advice on some suburbs to check out that are still safe, good neighborhood and close to some amenities but more affordable than downtown Perth or West Perth? Looking for 2+ bedrooms any size, any type property (house, apartment, townhouse etc)

Check http://reiwa.com.au/home/default.aspx for info on homes and

http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/ for public transport info.

Perth is generally expensive ATM due to the mining boom, lots of miners with excess cash looking for places to buy/rent and driving up prices.
