Katherine to Broome return

Gidday driving above route with wife and 6yo son June/July this year. Have 2 weeks and am planning on spending 2 nights in Broome. Any accom reccomendations alomg the way- camping or otherwise. Guess I'll be getting maps from RACQ which will let us know what's sealed or not. Haved gleaned a fair bit from web already but any "must not miss" tips appreciated, particularly involving safe swimming holes. Cheers

Hi,

In 2 weeks it will be a whistle stop tour. I just started to map out an itinerary of what I consider highlights, and ran out of days! So - absolute highlights:

Kununurra, El Questro, Manning Gorge (for the walk to the falls) , Windjana Gorge , Fitzroy Crossing (for Geike Gorge), Broome, Cape Leveque, Purnululu.

There's options for accommodation at all except Manning and Windjana.

Grab a copy of Ron & Viv Moon's Guide to the Kimberley to help you plan. As far as what's sealed and not - the Gibb River Rd is not, the loop from Fitzroy Crossing to the Gibb River rd is not, the road into Purnululu is not and the road to Cape Leveque is not.

If you want accommodation in June / July you need to book it pretty soon!

Booking Broome as we speak. Seems to be a lot of accom but none cheap as you would expect for our timez, middle of winter and school hols- married to teacher what do you do- but all good. Still filling in the gaps over and back. 2 weeks isn't long but hey drove Calgary to Anchorage return 8000ks in 12 days - in a smallish sedan- and loved every minute of it. You do what you can with the time you've got. Any tips appreciated, cheers Ralph.

Yes, unfortunately its peak season when you will be travelling and as for Broome, you are often lucky to find accommodation.

Best of luck with it all and do contact the visitor centre for further suggestions in regard to where to stay if you are still looking.
