Nice restaurant for Christmas dinner?

Hello everyone,

We’ll be in Melbourne over Christmas as part of our 3-week honeymoon down under. Do you have any recommendations of somewhere nice for our Christmas dinner? It’s my fiancé’s birthday on the 21st, and as I said we’ll be on honeymoon and away from home for Christmas, so it’d be nice to have a nice Christmas dinner somewhere special! We love food (I am Italian) and we’re open to trying new things. Your recommendations are welcome!

Many thanks!

Many restaurants in Melbourne do not open on Christmas Day. About the end of September or early October is when hotels and restaurants that are open for Christmas Dinner start advertising and taking bookings. So I suggest that you look on Google at that stage.

You will need to book in advance for Christmas Dinner.

Most of the five star hotels in Melbourne are open for Christmas Dinner.

I have been to Christmas Dinner at the Sofitel Hotel and also at Taxi Restaurant and can recommend either of these.

On the last page of this article is an old list from several years ago of suggested places in Central Melbourne for Christmas Dinner: theage.com.au/news/…1195321658893.html. Most of the suggestions are still applicable although the prices mentioned have changed.

I'm not sure about the 25th of December, you will probably find a lot of places are indeed closed, but Cuckoo Restaurant does a special Christmas Eve dinner, and I would certainly book early. Friday and Saturday are usually quite full in general but the atmosphere there is very jovial. The restaurant is quite an institution, up in the Dandenong Ranges on the outskirts of Melbourne, with a smorgasboard of food and a Bavarian show with a comical slant as part of the dinner.

I love going there, though I always over-eat!

Check out the website:

If you like Asian cuisine another great place is China Bar Signature in the suburb of Burwood East. The number 75 tram from Melbourne City goes past it. It doesn't have much "atmosphere" as such, the asians aren't renowned for that though it is still quite classy (just gets pretty crowded), but the variety and quality of food is far superior to any of your average run-of-the-mill asian smorgasboard restaurants.

Their website is:

Good luck. Melbourne is very cosmopolitan, especially in regards to the different cuisines available here. You'll find something, and check out the websites above! Enjoy your honeymoon!

China Bar and The Cuckoo are not exactly central Melbourne - they're about 20kms and 45kms respectively from the city.

I can highly recommend The Point restaurant at Albert Park. I went there for Christmas Day lunch last year with my two sisters ( I was heavily pregnant, so couldn't fly interstate to be with my parents and the rest of the family). We had the buffet lunch, and it was sensational. Lots of delicious seafood, salads and roasts and a great selection of wine.

I'd have no hesitation in going back again this year. I strongly suggest calling NOW if you want a reservation. Good luck

We have had Christmas lunch at The Point in Albert park which was just lovely. Also worth a look is Vue Du Monde, which may be open for Christmas. I don't really like hotels for Christmas as there are usually too many people. There are restaurants that open for lunch/dinner, but not too many.
