Car Hire First Timers from UK

Hello!

We are arriving in Brisbane in a few weeks from the UK, we are picking up a hire car at Brisbane airport. Can anyone advise what driving licence info we need to bring in addition to the actual drivers licence card?

In the U.K we have an ID card style licence and we used to have a second part which was a paper copy. Recently the paper section was discontinued but we are wondering if we need to bring anything specific. The Hertz website isn't very clear....

We can't wait to arrive and experience our adventure!!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice

Start here with FAQs

https://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au/faq/

And compare you car hire price to www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au (you need to go to car hire websites to get any discounts/specials)

And www.tripcover.com.au to reduce cost of excess insurance (the car company excess reduction is very expensive).

Your credit cards may have excess reduction insurance.

You only need your photo licence ... there has not been any paper licences in Australia for more than 30 years ... read up on our road rules, there are some differences.

In particular, note that the way we turn right is different. If two cars are approaching an intersection from opposite directions and both want to turn right, they pass in front of each other and not behind.

Have a great time - if you can find the time, please come back to us with a trip report - it is always great to see what others experienced - what was enjoyable, and whether there were things you would do differently.

cheers.

Please reconsider your plan to pick up your car at the airport...

Are you coming off a longhaul flight? If so you will be a danger on our roads - tired travellers getting into strange cars not necessarily knowing exactly where they are going (even with the aid of a satnav) and driver behaviour of other road users that is unfamiliar so often leads to an accident

Please plan to have at least one full nights sleep on Aussie soil before jumping behind the wheel - for your sake and for the safety of other road users

please read up on the road rules too https:/…Queensland-road-rules

We just hired with Hertz from Brisbane. We only needed the photo licence. If you are only driving north from the airport, i.e towards Noosa there are no tolls to pay, so you don't need a toll pass for the car. If you are also going into Brisbane with the car, or towards the Gold Coast, then you will need a toll pass from Hertz.

If heading in to Brisbane city, you can easily avoid the toll roads - we rarelyuse them as they are expensive and dont save much time if in non peak hour. If heading to the Gold Coast, then the fastest way is over the Gateway Bridge, which is a toll, but you could also head in to the city and down the M1, avoiding the tolls again.

Cheers.

Thank you for theinfo regarding toll roads, great help! We will get a toll pass from Hertz as I'm sure we'll need it.

Also we are not flying in from from the U.K. but thanks for the concern regarding driving when tired.

Can't wait now, we are on the countdown!!
