Tours from Alice Springs to Darwin

We are a fairly fit couple aged 67 & 72 who are planning a long trip to Aus. in March/April 2019. We are looking for a tour which can take us from Alice Springs to Darwin to include the Uluru, Kings Canyon area then going up to Darwin seeing Katherine Gorge, Bungle Bungles, etc. We have already been around Kakadu so are not looking to include this area. We are used to camping so a budget trip is what we are really looking for. I have spent ages looking for such a trip but the ones that look interesting are for under 50's!! Am I expecting too much or should we just hire a motor home? However, the thought of all that driving doesn't really appeal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you really mean the Bungle Bungles? That’s a heck of a detour, they are not on the was from AS to Darwin. They are in Northern Western Australia.

The fact March is one of the wettest months and cyclone season may be impacting tour availability. Heap tours usually mean backpackers which mean suited to the young.

Have you thought of DIY? Wiht a bit of work and help fro this forum, you could tailor you own itinerary. I doubt that any organised tour would exclude Kakadu.

You wont find tours to Purunulu at that time as the road is generally shut, and the park will not be open.

It is also a 12 hour deviation from Katherine by road, The best you will get is maybe a scenic flight over them from Kunurrrua.

There are far less tours at that time due to access issues and the high humidity in the north and searing temps in the red centre.

Yo may want to do two separate tours one around Alice and one for Darwin- but as I said its wet season and things like LItchfield really have very little access if there has been a bit wet like this year, By late April you can get into a few more things once they are opened.

Kings Canyon will be very hot as well for the hike- so be wary of that. Where it is forecast for 36 deg plus you need to start your walk prior to 9am. Though it would be foul in those temps as the top is not sheltered. If you do the south wall on those days you need to start before 11am.

West Macs have some nice cool rock pools, but also very hot for walks- no matter how fit you are. Every year around that time, people seem to get lost and dehydrated.

No way would I camp in the top end in the wet season. People generally think those that live in Darwin in the wet season are mad- but we are not that crazy!! Mozzies also an issue, as are crocs in waterways.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I think it is back to the drawingboard and maybe leave UK later in the year so that we get to Alice late April.

No, no self advertising more of a recommendation for advice from a local in Alice not Darwin. They can also try Outback Elite, Oz Trax, Alice Springs Expeditions and

Sandrifter. All doing personalised itineraries for people who don’t want to be a number on a bus.
