New Years Eve accommodation Sydney 2013/2014

Can anyone recommend accommodation for NYE 2013/2014 in Sydney. My mother will be celebrating her 80th birthday & would like to go to Sydney NYE fireworks. There will be approx 14 adults and 5 children (between 11 and 13years).

There's a "sticky" above your post which relates to NYE as well as FAQs to the right of your screen about NYE.

A couple of things to be aware of ...crowds, costs and accessibility to see the fireworks.

If your mother has mobility issues or cannot stand / walk for long periods of time, you may be best booking a restaurant with a view of the fireworks rather than joining the crowds around Circular Quay / Mrs Macquarie's Chair and other harbourside venues.

Secondly, no matter where you stay, there will be a minimum number of nights stay ... often 3 nights for city hotels but sometimes more.

Thirdly, people start to grab spots early and road closures start in the afternoon and continue to the morning of 1st January so car travel will be difficult and there may be long queues for public transport or long walks back to your hotel.

For hotels, I'm not sure if it is a matter of recommending accommodation at this stage as much of the accommodation is apparently booked quite heavily if in fact all of the rooms have been released. So it may be a case of what you can find that is available and within your budget

If you want a room with a view of the fireworks, then there are several around Circular Quay where you would pay a premium for a room with the view of the fireworks. There are some with roof top access too but again they tend to get crowded.

It you look at a 3rd party booking site such as www.wotif.com.au and order the search by The Rocks (or Circular Quay if you can) then you will see the hotels in that vicinity. You could contact those hotels directly to discuss if there is a room with a view if you don't want to brave the crowds. Given that there will be 5 in your group, and if a hotel with a room view is something of interest, I'd get one with the view and the other without a view.

I wouldn't over look Darling Harbour at this stage if you can get a room with a view facing the Bridge ... you will certainly see the fireworks in the sky but not the east side of the bridge where the waterfall of fireworks occurs.

check out the sydney harbour yha....great views.

stay in a dorm room. share the bathrooms. get a double room with private bathroom for your mother.

perhaps write/contact the hotel and mention that it is for a large group and that it is your mother's 80th birthday.

location is good but it is upwards from the rocks so not suitable for those unable/unwilling to climb steps. flatter access is by car on cumberland street.
