What's so confusing? The car types? Inclusions/exclusions?

If in doubt, just use a company with an international profile such as Hertz, Avis etc.

A car is only useful if you are heading out of Sydney. City driving is slow and you will fork out a lot of money to park it in the city.

For a long rental I'd also suggest looking at Bayswater, though be mindful that their cheapest daily rates have limited km. Prices for the international chains fluctuate enormously. I just booked a car from Hertz for the entire upcoming long weekend for $90 whereas a couple of weeks ago they wanted that much per day for a vehicle. There are a couple of advantages of using international chains: they have outlets all over the country, so of something goes wrong with your car, getting a replacement is (comparatively) easier, plus for a 1 month rental you'd score a decent wad of miles in your chosen frequent flyer account.

Finally it doesn't hurt to look at the UK sites of hertz, Avis, budget, europcar for quotes - occasionally cheaper than booking on their .com.au sites.

When in Australia we used the price comparison site above and ended up with Hertz for a pick up in Brisbane and drop off in Sydney with 2 weeks in between and when in Sydney itself we used Bayswater Car Hire for a weekend hire as they offered a better deal but generally are pick up and drop off at the same location only. We had no problems with either.. also look at getting independent car hire insurance as is much cheaper than going with the supplemental insurance offered by the company itself (with the exception of a short hire with Bayswater as they offered an excess reduction option at a surprisingly small premium).
