Canadian mobile phone in Australia?

Hey Everyone,

Me and my husband will be traveling in Australia in for 5 weeks in April before heading to New Zealand for a few weeks. We would like to take and use our mobile phones with us (we are both with rogers), but don't know what carries are available overseas or what to do to avoid expensive fees on our phones. Any help is much appreciated :)

Hi. You need to consider:

1. can your phones be used in Aus, - generally that's 900 MHz or 1800 MHz for GSM phones, 850 MHz, 900 MHz or 2100 MHz for 3G phones. Most modern devices are multi-band, but better to be safe that sorry....

2. the cost of 'global roaming' with your local carrier - it's often hideously expensive,

3. if your phone handsets can be used in Aus, consider buying prepaid local SIM cards, which you can 'top up' at need.

Safe travels.

take your phones if they are not locked to your local carrier and simply get an ausssie SIM card when you are here. Don't use your canadian service mobile over here for internet etc or you will be in for a shocking bill when you return.

either turn off data roaming and just use your mobile to check for urgent calls or get a local phone, you can buy them for next to nothing when you are here.

I know of so many horror stories where people have taken their phones overseas only to discover that the costs are horrendous... investigate your options with your carrier (ie check mhz etc... )then make the best financial decision for you both

You may wish to check your service provider as some Canadian phones even if unlocked will not take any sim card as they are programmed to a serial number.
