You are not joking, are you?

It is a sweater. Normally knitted, rather than fleece. That is why sheep can be heard referred to here as "woolly jumpers"...

3. Re: What is a jumper?

yes alas we just cal them sweaters. here, jumpers are skirts with a top attached, under which you wear a blouse--often part of school uniforms. first time i went to Ireland, i had no idea why they suggested i bring a jumper. haven't worn one in 40 years. lol

From the Dinkum Dictionary

need a kick up the jumper, right up one's jumper, you can stick it up your jumper!, up your jumper!

1.severe encouragement or incentive eg:He needs a kick up the a..e every now and again or else he gets lazy

2.severe discipline, scolding, reproach, beating, thrashing, punishment eg: He needs a good kick up the jumper over the way he's been treating that poor dog.

8. Re: What is a jumper?

This question is almost up there with "Are penguins reliable?" :-)

Another term used in Aus is pullover.

I hope the OP is getting used to the Aus sense of humour :-)
