Needing Itinerary and Transport Ideas from Perth-to ?

Hi :)

Advice Please: Currently, our 20-yr old son is touring South Australia and currently in Perth. (His ride-share situation went sour midway through trip and so he opted out at Perth). Originally, Darwin was the next stop. Now, plans are needing to be recalibrated. He's got 14 more days of travel before needing to fly out of SYD on 29/5/18. He can fly from Perth to Darwin, but not sure

what budget-friendly transportation options are available. Sounds like Darwin might not have public transportation options to the local sights. Given time, budget and transportation limitations, would you advise him to skip heading to the North and focus on South Australia? This is his first trip to AUS. His prior two weeks of this trip have been spent touring coastal cities (including SYD, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Esperance). He was hoping to see some of the incredible sights in the North (Kakadu Nat'l, Cairns, etc.), but unsure of what is realistic. Recommendations?

He's mature for his age and on a limited budget, craves the outdoors, Aussie history, novel experiences, etc. Wants to make the most of his remaining time in thisamazing country!

Advice ASAP is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

As I mentioned on your previous question-

From Perth- Have a look at catching the Integrity bus. Stop at Monkey Mia then Exmouth/ Coral Bay for Ningaloo Reef.

This will certainly satisfy the outdoor interests plus is a reasonable budget option.

Then fly Perth to Sydney on which ever airline is cheaper.

And/or look at Jetstar flight Perth to Cairns. Go somedays and sometimes cheap. Midnight horror times.

Forget Darwin as think flights are expensive.

To avoid confusion, there is a state called South Australia and you seem to be referring to the southern part of Australia which includes multiple states. As for the south or north question, be aware it is now late autumn (fall) so the north will be warmer, in fact the far north is tropical.

Thanks, Jean, for your feedback!

As far as most "WOW"s per km, would you recommend Cairns over Darwin as a Northern destination if he were to fly before working his way back to Sydney?

Others might have ideas- I actually haven’t been to Darwin. But just with flight costs, Jetstar direct to Cairns might be best bet. But note don’t think it goes every day. And FNQ- Cairns etc is well set up for tourists and maybe more budget options.

Still look at Integrity - even as far as Shark Bay- a remote feeling. A week in the north of WA then Cairns region would be a great contrast and possibly best budget option.

Is he in Perth now? Make sure he visits Fremantle- there’s some good hostels and great area for a solo traveller. Would be my choice for a solo traveller. Head to Rottnest Island on Tuesday is sometimes cheaper. Check Sealink as well.

There’s bikes he can hire in Freo- even free ( eg from Little Creatures) so can then ride to Cottesloe Beach and River. Free CAT bus to South Beach where young travelers sometimes hang out.

These were the replies to previous question - unfortunately your son has bailed out at the furthest point from Sydney. A flight(s) will be necessary to back to Sydney.

If I had to choose between Darwin area and Cairns area, I would choose Cairns. It had Great Barrier Reef, and that alone would sway me towards it. It has a lot more though.
