Looking for traditional Portuguese establishments. We would welcome ideas?

Hi. Vilamoura is a new area, with a nice marina plenty of restaurants and bars, hotels and apartments, big beach and casino. If you look for a tradicional place it will be not the best choice. Maybe better Albufeira oldtown, Lagos or Tavira.

I will also suggest the next door town of Quarteira for a more traditional feel. Vilamoura is a manufactured holiday resort town, with not an ounce of tradition about it.

Had noticed those digs before,

I think there are some traditional restaurants around VILAMOURA , Universal comes to mind also in Quarteira one or two around the Fish Market.

Traditional Portuguese restaurants in Vilamoura I have used are Cataplana, Casa do Pescador, Baganca Mar and ACarpa to name a few

Plenty of traditional places in all towns in the Algarve, you'll have no problem finding one. Each place offers something different, Vilamoura is perhaps aimed more at couples and young families and the more mature traveller. if you are looking for a more chav "here we go" type holiday try Albufeira (now that is a dig) !

Whether it is Vilamoura, Quarteira or Albufeira all are farely accessible public transport during the day but they are limited in the evening, so its Taxi later unless you have a car, I stay in Vilamoura but do regularly go to Quarteira and Albufeira but now find the latter a bit hilly for the wife and I and no longer a late night reveller

though being a ex Navy man, traveling from east to west was very much the party man.

Cubsur have you ever been to Vilamoura recently ? .It might surprise you to find people actually enjoying theirselves there ! (thats a dig as well) . As for the question from OxfordSiam I would also endorse the UNIVERSAL , its where the locals go , again, for a fish meal then its all the way around the marina as far as the boatyard slipway ,you will find a little place there , again full of locals .(and sometimes the famous)

Good on you coventrykid in my 32 years of Visit to the Algarve visiting most areas I still find Vilamoura the best in many ways its location the variety of attractions it has to offer its not all golf and sailing but that is quite a great part, I have visited most regions of the Algarve but still return to Vilamoura even when booked elsewhere I may a book a couple of nights during my time. It may be a man made tourist resort but tastefully done, look at all the hotels that have sprung up over Albufeira, the BUS Station has been move 3 times to my knowledge, I love Quarteira especially the old town and the many traditional Restaurants La Cabana is one that I enjoy, then there is the Piri Piri and on the outskirts the Marufu best Piri piri, there are two cant remember which but it gets crowded. Dont get me wrong I will still visit Albufeira at least 3 or 4 times during my stay but not as a base.
