Double Booking a night to visit VNP

We have a condo booked in Waikoloa Village for a month in January 2019. We want to visit VNP and not be rushed (we have been there once before and really enjoyed it) and also see the lava at night (if possible) so we are considering getting a basic room at Kilauea Lodge for one night? My questions are, is it worth it? Would it be best to wait until we're on the island to book something at that time of year or book further ahead of time? The basic rooms are running about $200, so it seems reasonable. Thanks!

I would wait until you get here since you will be here so long, you'll have plenty of flexibility on dates and looking out and seeing what the weather will be like, etc. Kilauea Lodge may book up but there's almost always something reasonable available a week or so out.

Thanks Shea! That's kind of what I was thinking but wanted to get other opinions. We're used to Maui, where everything books up a year ahead of time.

Are you in Waikoloa Village or Waikoloa Beach Resort? Just curious; sometimes people aren't aware that they're two different places, and that WV isn't on the coast. : )

If you are doing just VNP then you don't need to plan ahead of time but if you want to loop the whole island at one time think about maybe 4 day tour - 3 nights in Hilo at say Bay House B&B. On your transit day do all of the Hamakua Coast sites, 2nd day maybe scenic loop of Lower Puna, 3rd day all day at VNP, 4th day come back around via Captain Cook to see Painted Church and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park then maybe dinner in Kailua-Kona along Alii drive.area.
