Where to stay in Cassis
Save

My family of 4 are planning to stay in Cassis for a couple of nights in Sept. We're hoping to rent a car, so we'd prefer a place with parking, but we'd like it to be somewhat central, so we can walk downtown and to the water. The only place available in Cassis seems to be the most expensive, but there are places in La Ciotat. What's La Ciotat like? For one day we're planning a trip to the calanques and then maybe a quick dash to Marseilles.

Thanks for your help!

La Ciotat is bigger than Cassis, yet a small town with a good service level (lots of all kinds of mid range / casual restaurants, major Carrefour supermarket etc.). As Cassis is a tourist attraction with well maintained houses etc., La Ciotat is clearly more rugged and authentic. La Ciotat is known for Lumiere brothers, pioneers of moving pictures and the former shipyard converted to service station for luxury yachts. It is perhaps easier to find a suitable hotel there. You should perhaps do some Google Maps street view peeking in La Ciotat to understand what I am trying to say. Our intention is to have some meals and spend some lazy time in La Ciotat in the later half of June, that is in about one week's time. We think La Ciotat is at least ok, if not better than that.

In La Ciotat, there is a long beach towards east (St Cyr as the next town). The hills between La Ciotat and Cassis offer great views towards the sea and inland, hope the weather is clear when you visit the place.

If you are hesitant regarding La Ciotat, one good alternative would be Bandol, which is a very tourist friendly place, next from St Cyr, which is also OK, but focuses more on private villas and apartments rather than hotels. Bandol is well connected to the motorway, so the drive to e.g. Marseille is very easy.

I am quite surprised that Cassis is fully booked in September!

Did you check out self catering or do you want a hotel?

I just found about a hotel in Cassis, described as excellent. The name is Hotel Mahogany. You will easily find it by google or here at TA.

I'm not bothered as to whether it's a hotel or self catering. I was also surprised to find when I put my dates in, that only one hotel had availability. I used a number of different booking sites as well. I'm wondering if the issue is that there are 4 of us, so we need a larger room. I'm wondering if there are more private hotels that don't use the booking sites? I'm leaning towards staying in Cassis, even with the more expensive hotel (what the heck - it is our holiday after all!), but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be happy to check them out.

Thanks!

There are 2 hotels I have seen downtown, but there are others.

Hotel du Golfe with nice views

Hotel Clos des Aromes

We didn't stay there, but had exact the same view as hotel du Golfe. These are 2 stars.

Other than that Hotel des Roches Blanches is very nice but farther from downtown village.

I stayed in Le Laurence a few years ago and though I see it's had some patchy reviews on TA, it is perfectly situated. The only real issue is that it still does not take credit cards so you have to find a way of drawing out cash for a whole stay - ok if it's a coupla days, less so if it's a week for two people.
