Cassis as week 1 of our honeymoon?
Save

Hi ,

I am bouncing between Italy and France for our honeymoon but have read a bit about Cassis and as we are looking for a 2 week break that consists of lots of beach, swimming and kayaking every day followed by evening strolls and nice restaurants Cassis seems to hit the spot. Am I right?

Also where could you suggest for our second week's break that is easy to travel to from Cassis. We won't be driving and again a good beach/sea is the focal point followed by a nice town to stroll in during the evenings.

I really appreciate any help .

Hiya Lily,

Well, Cassis is lovely, but not large or that diverting. If you literally want to sit on the beach and swim it is a great base, but other than the beach/Calanques/lots of fairly touristy places to eat/drink there is not a huge amount to see or do. That said for those things Cassis is excellent! You could have a day trip to Aix-en-Provence or Marseilles, too?

For your second week you could consider Nice. It has a very nice, busy beach (although it is not sandy, it is pebbled) with good swimming (nice, clean, deep water quickly). The city is a wonderful place; the old town, the Cours Saleya (market), the harbour, the Château, loads of places to eat/enjoy a beverage. Plus, you are central for public transport so could visit Monaco, Cannes, Vence, Eze, etc if you wished.

We spent a week in Cassis last May. Beautiful little town. The beach is small, but nice. The water gorgeous. Good restaurants (great little bakery!) but it is a small town, but very hilly away from the water. You can walk the waterfront/downtown area (where most of the restaurants and shops are) in less than an hour. We also had a couple of day trips (along the coast, to Arles, Le Baux, Avignon). We enjoyed our stay very much. That being said, take a look at the Cinque Terre area of northwestern Italy. We spent a couple of days in Riomaggiore a couple of years ago and loved it. The area is beautiful, nice restaurants and cafes in each of the villages. One other suggestion if you haven't considered it (and if good beaches are important), look at western Crete.

Where ever you end up, enjoy!
