Amalfi Coast - Positano in Winter??? Is it worth it??

Hi we are travelling to Italy in mid Feb 2007. We'd love to stay in Positano for 2 or 3 nights but not sure if it's worth it in winter?

Has anyone visited there in Winter time? We don't plan on going to the beach just sightseeing, people watching etc. I've heard Positano is a must see when visiting Italy but I've also heard the Amalfi Coast basically 'shuts down' during Winter.

Any hints tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you everyone.

Dear BOBALO,

I've heard the same that hotels and shops in Positano shut down during the Winter. However, I've seen posts from people who say that several hotels remain open and certainly businesses in Amalfi operate as usual.

The weather turns very cold in February and it'd be a good idea to bring a heavy jacket and some sweaters. Also, comfortable shoes or boots might come in handy if it rains.

Grazie kkushiba1!

I have been devouring different guide books etc and I'll try and find a pensione in Positano that remains open.

I've decided even in Winter the amalfi coast is a 'must see'.

I think we'll do the amalfi coast last thing on our trip, meaning we'll be there early march for a couple of days.

Thank you for your help!

We visited Positano in January of 2003. We stayed at Le Sirenuse.

We had wonderful weather. We needed a light jacket from time to time. Weather allowed us to have some of our meals on the terrace.

Many restaurants and shops do close, but the best ceramics shops and several restaurants were open.

It will be too cool to enjoy the sea or pool, but having the area to yourself is fantastic. No traffic, no crowds!!!

I asked our driver about the weather and he said the only drawback for a winter visit can be fog. One of our three days in Positano was overcast with fog. I might have been a bit disappointed if we had been denied the views the entire time.

I was so pleased with our visit in January that I am now planning our 20th anniversary trip to Positano.

Hello,

I am leaving close to Positano.......is beautiful also during the winter!!

For my suggestion you should stay to Sorrento and from there easly visit positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri...and Sorrento.

Ok..during the winter Positano is beautiful but is enought one day!!!: -)..but from Sorrento is Ok..

If you need more info let me know!!!

Dear BOBALO,

One source says that La Sirenuse in Positano is closed from Dec-Feb and then has offers for March 2007:

http://www.sirenuse.it/Hotel/RsrHome.asp

You can send them an email at info@sirenuse.it

You might be able to find something at L'Ancora or Hotel Posa Posa, Casa Albergo Albertina:

Otherwise, you could stay in Amalfi maybe at Hotel Santa Caterina, Hotel Miramalfi, Hotel Tramonto d'Oro in Praiano or as mentioned in Sorrento.

I was there this past November and though it was chilly at times, it was absolutely gorgeous. Clear and beautiful and the towns were nearly empty except for locals. A great experience. I didn't think the beaches here were the "lay out" type anyway so I didn't feel cheated out of that experience. They are more the stroll and admire type and this we did joyfully.

Go whenever you can! And I agree that Sorrento is a better base than Positano. Not that Positano isn't amazing and beautiful - I just agree that it's more of a one day thing and in the winter I would think it would have less to offer than Sorrento. Sorrento is larger but still small and charming - I think you 'll find more to do and see and enjoy here that will be open by mid February. Plus you have easy access to anyplace else you wish to visit along the coast.

Ciao! LL
