From Positano to Rome to catch a train.... Please Help!

We are trying to plan our trip in May and need some assistance. What is the easiest and most convenient way to get from Positano to Rome in order to catch a 9:16PM train. We want to maximize our time and we are not sure if there is a direct train from Sorrento into Rome in the early evening or should we somehow get to Naples? How much time do we need to get there? Do I need to make reservations from either Naples or Sorrento to Rome or can we just jump on the train that day? I have looked on tranitalia.com as well as Eurorail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Grazie Mille!! Katya

Dear Katya-in-sf,

No direct train exists from Sorrento to Roma Termini FS Train Station.

You could consider taking a SITA bus or private driver from Positano to Sorrento. Then you could maybe consider taking a 6am Mon-Sat (May 1 is a holiday so no Marozzi buses run) Marozzi Bus from Sorrento Circumvesuviana Train Station to Roma Tiburtina FS Train Station (arrives at 9:45am). However, this route gets to to Roma perhaps too early depending on what your itinerary is:

Otherwise, you could consider taking a SITA bus or private driver to Positano, a Circumvesuviana Train from Sorrento to Napoli, then you could take a train from Napoli Centrale or Napoli Piazza Garibaldi (downstairs) FS Train Station to Roma Termini. You could also consider taking a private driver from Positano to Napoli Centrale:

www.sorrento-online.com/english/transfer.htm

The route from Positano to Napoli would cost €3.20 a person(UnicoCampania U5 fascia 5 ticket) and you'd need to buy a ticket from a tobacconist before boarding the bus. Here's a link for the SITA bus:

You might aim to take a train around 5:30pm-6pm from Napoli Centrale so that you can be in Roma Termini to make your 9:16pm train. Many trains run between Napoli Centrale and Roma Termini Mon-Sat, so you can choose your train depending on its speed and price. Again May 1 is a holiday so fewer buses and trains will run that day.

If you decide to take the Circumvesuviana Train, you need to get off at Napoli Piazza Garibaldi. Then head up a couple of flights of stairs and follow the signs to Napoli Centrale which will be down a hallway.

Thank you so much for your help! I would like to compliment you because I have been reading the forums and noticed that quite often you go out of your way and answer poeples questions in great detail. You're wonderful. Bravo! Grazie Mille!

Dear Katya-in-sf,

Prego and I pray that you're not travelling on May 17 when there will be a Trenitalia train strike:

www.summerinitaly.com/planning/strike.asp

I'm not sure if you're already in Positano, however, jfyi presently there's an art and wine-sort of street fair which might compare with the Union Street Street Fair in SF (less like the Polk Street and Haight Street ones):

www.positanonews.it/menu/default.asp?id=5555

By the ways, you could also consider taking a €7 70 minute ferry from Positano to Salerno Molo Masuccio/Porto Turistico. This company charges €1.50 per luggage:

coopsantandrea.com/it/…

Then you could walk up the pier, cross the big parking lot, head a little to the right and cross two streets (cross the second street at the stop light where the white bars are to mark the pedestrian crosswalk) and you'll be at the entrance of the Salerno FS Train Station where you can take a direct train from Salerno to Roma Termini. You can buy your tickets from either ticket window #3 or #4 (the ones usually open out of the 1-9) or from the automatic ticket machine (there are 2, however, 1 is usually broken). Unfortunately, there is no elevator to get up to the main platform so you would need to carry your luggage up a flight of stairs.

Buona Fortuna...

We are leaving tomorrow.... thank you so much for the warning and advice. It is so thoughtful of you... and very kind. We will be on a cruise on May 17th and will not be using the train from that point on. Thank you again!

Not sure when you are travelling....but the easiest thing to do

is take the ferry from Positano to Salerno. The train station is 4 blocks from the ferry . The train from Salerno goes directly to

Rome. Ferry 45 minutes and train just under 3 hours.

The is also the option of the commuter train from Meta de Sorrento

to Naples and change trains Naples to Rome.

I have a friend in Positano whose daughter lives in Rome and she

uses the Salerno train allot.

Good Luck
