I'm trying to sort out a trip for my uncle to get to see Muckle Flugga. He'll take the ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Is it easy to get from Lerwick to Unst? Would it be preferable to hire a car?

There is bus links and car hire links here ;

Bear in mind it can be a little "choppy" on the long ferry journey and he may not be rested enough to go on long drive.
Edited: 10 years agoYes, a car will give you more freedom but I have a friend from Norway who is happy to use the bus network but she's fit and healthy and likes to walk.
Really and if your uncle is elderly I think hiring a car would be best.
Another thing is there's no road to Muckle Flugga. The road takes you so far but to get to where you can see Muckle Flugga is a pathway/track.
I haven't been myself but I'm led to believe it's 1.5 miles.
Edited: 10 years agoWhat time of year is this for? Beware the breeding skuas, who'll defend their nests. The path mentioned earlier goes through their breeding area.
I think it'll be July sometime. Thanks for you help
I don't think breeding Great Skuas (known locally as bonxies) will be a problem as long as you stick to the path and boardwalks. You'll be walking on Hermaness National Nature Reserve - heres a link for more information http://www.nnr-scotland.org.uk/hermaness/
Another advantage of walking on Hermaness to get a great view of Muckle Flugga is that you'll experience the wonderful seabird colonies there - the gannets are spectacular.
