Kirkenes or Kiruna?

My wife and I will be up North the first week in December..

Our main interest is NL, dog sledding related activities..

For those in the know, your thoughts on either, travelling upto Kirkenes for activities then fly to Oslo and train to Stockholm OR travel down from Tromso to Narvik and over to Kiruna for our activities and the train down to Stockholm?

Matt

You find all those activities in Tromsø, so I do not quite understand your question.

Would your question be how to get to Stockholm in the most efficient way ?

May be you are over optimistic on travel opportunities and easyness in north Norwegian December :-)

It is like a mountain / hill part of Australia but full of ice and snow with a lot of days with very short daylight. Sometimes after snow storms they try to re-find the streets under the snow. That is the reason why at some Norwegian streets there are standing long wooden stakes at the side.

Therefore try to minimize travelling part compared to staying part. Take one place such as Tromso, Narvik ... which you can do the activities a little around and from there head on by plane to Stockholm likely via Oslo.

Hi, we are fully aware of the lack of daylight and winter conditions.

We are in Tromso late November and there is no guarantee we can do some of the activities due to the potential lack of snow, many of the providers do not even start activities till Dec 1st.

Hence the plan to go where there is plenty of snow Kirkenes or Kiruna, and seeing how we are not used to the cold here in Sydney we wanted to freeze our backsides off for this once only trip to somewhere cold.!!!

Hm, snow = precipitation, moving on to drier fjord- or inland areas, will not guarantee anything. Snow accumulates during the winter season, the later the better. Perhaps you could try your luck in a mountain area like Abisko.

Camp Tamok with access from Tromsø could be another option as it is a higher level inland location.

Spend your days in the north!

If your main visit are Tromsø, then you can duplicate what many like to do, a return trip with http://hurtigruten.com to Kirkenes.

Stay overnight at http://kirkenessnowhotel.com

They offer also King Crab fishing and dog sledding!

Fly directly from Tromso to Sthlm...
