Critique my itinerary to Scandinavia

Hello,

My fiancee and myself will be travelling to Scandinavia in June. I was wondering if someone could look over our trip itinerary and let me know if there are any changes you would recommend or any things I have overlooked.

We are both 29 years old. We plan to travel to Bergen by NiN, do some hikes, visit the Fjords, See the midnight sun, and do some fun activities (kayaking, maybe some winter sports up north).

Note:

-You can ignore the first portion of the trip in France.

-For the trip to Bergen, we would like to take the NiN. Would people recommend staying overnight in Myrdal or Flam? Or just head straight to Bergen to save a day?

-I have omitted Copenhagen as I think we would be too pressed for time. Any opposed to this idea?

-I'm trying to decide if a trip to Stavanger is worth it considering we would have to travel back to Bergen and it might be time consuming.

-My trip to Sweden is limited to Stockholm at the moment. Any other areas I should consider? (maybe northern areas that are driving distance from Lofoton)

Hi Glendon and welcome to the Norway forum!

1. You may not be able to find available accommodation in Flåm in June trying to book only a month ahead. I would stay in Flåm or alternatively Vatnahalsen https://www.vatnahalsen.no/en/vatnahalsen

2. Day 12 and day 13 are not adding up. No point in going to Stavanger when you need to be in Bergen on day 13 for the Hurtigruten departure.

3. Your time in the Lofoten Islands is too short. Really too short! No point in going up there if you only have two full days to explore. Allocate minimum 4-5 full days for this part of Norway.

I think this is an interesting itinerary. Feel free to return to the forum with a trip report, we appreciate as they help future visitors plan their itineraries.

And even if you say ignore the France bit, I would say spend your time in Paris and skip Toulouse. Arriving from overseas you may also be jet-lagged. A week is suitable to cover Paris highlights, if you have less, you make do with less, but two days is not even enough to scratch the surface.

Otherwise I agree with Pippi, going all the way to Lofoten at considerable expense just for a couple of days, that does not make a lot of sense.

In my tourist experience you really underestimate distances and travel times in Norway, especially combined with hiking.

Around Bergen rent a car and just enjoy Hardangerfjord - some routes and tips already posted. Or do a Flam-trp. Skip Trolltunga and Pulpi hikingt. Do Reinebringen and a few others on Lofoten instead.

Bodo is waste of time for me: Choose LKN or prio B (here) EVE.

Suggestion: Last evening from Lofoten 12/6 take Hurtigruten ship from Svolvaer or Stamsund to Tromso and fly from there in the evening to Stockholm.

Good luck.

D9: Go directly to Bergen (do the NiN in one day), Flåm is a busy cruise port and not a place to stay.

Take the Geiranger trip on Hurtigruten and return to Ålesund the evening. That is one and a half day, not one as you write.

I agree that you're a bit short on time for Lofoten. Keep the car and drive National Tourist route 17 Helgeland coast Trondheim - Bodø instead, it's a very scenic experience, and you have the time.

Note that the one way drop off fee for the rental car will be rather high, check if it pays off doing it in two legs, Ålesund - Trondheim and Trondheim - Bodø.

Thanks for the quick and informative responses!

This forum is amazing and I really appreciate all the time you guys put in to helping others.

Pippi: Some good points. Okay I'm skipping Stavanger and have allotted more time for The Lofoton area.

klimaflyktning: I wish I could spend more of that time in Scandanavia, but we are visiting family in Toulouse, and have already booked our flights there.

infojunky_de: Thank's for the flight advice and the Hurtigruten idea. Do you know what time the ferry arrives in Tromso? I can see it departs Tromso at 1830, but I'm not sure what time it actually arrives. i'm trying to see if a flight from Tromso to Stockholm that evening would be feasible.

drengen: We are planning to take the overnight hurtigruten to Alesund which will save us travel time/accomodation. I really want to go to Lofoton. I've allocated some more time there.

Here's the updated itinerary:

D1 - 27/5 - land in Paris at 2000

D2 - 28/5 - Paris

D3 - 29/5 - Paris

D4 - 30/5 - Paris to Toulouse early morning.

D5 - 31/5 - Toulouse

D6 - 1/6 - Toulouse to Oslo early

D7 - 2/6 - Oslo

D8 - 3/6 - Oslo

D9 - 4/6 - NiN trip to bergen

D10 - 5/6 - Bergen

-"Vidden" from Ulriken to Floyen

-rent a car

D11 - 6/6 - Bergen

- overnight hurtigruten to alesund, leaves at 2000 and arrives at 0800

D12 - 7/6 - Rent Car and travel Alesund to Trondheim

-via trollstigen, atlantic road, explore

-stay overnight in Trondheim

D13 - 8/6 - Fly Tronheim to LKN or EVE. Lofoton

-8/6 flight to EVE (1200-1300) 94EUR

-rent car for duration of stay in Lofoton

D14 - 9/6 - Lofoton

D15 - 10/6 - Lofoton

D16 - 11/6 - Lofoton

D17 - 12/6 - Lofoton - hurtigruten from svolvaer to Tromso. Leaves at 2200.

D18 - 13/6 - Hurtigruten all day. Arrives at 1800. Fly Tromso to Stockholm in the evening

D19 - 14/6 - Stockholm -old town, sodermalm

D20 - 15/6 - Stockholm - Archipalago

D21 - 16/6 - Stockholm - ?Gotland

D22 - 17/6 - Fly Stockholm to Paris, and Fly out of Paris

Let me know if you see any flaws or have any further advice. Every bit of advice helps. Thanks again!

D18 - I would not count on connections Tromsø-Stockholm that late in the evening. It would make sense to go to Tromsø if you could catch a direct flight to Stockholm. These flights are not on a daily basis until late June and departure would be 13:35 hrs.

Here is the northbound summer sailing plan for Hurtigruten coastal line ships. Arrival time stands left.

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g190…

Tromso: ariival on 13/6 at 2.15 pm, a good afternoon window to catch filghts or stay a night and go up on Fjellheisen. https://fjellheisen.no/en/

Info port-to-port: https:/…

Online booking (Norwegian only): https://www.hurtigruten.no/havn-til-havn

Ships are mostly very much on time - except heavy weather. Debarking is very fast and easy, just check-out at reception before arriving destination.

Some tips how to use Hurtigruten as part of a (car) trip:

https:/…

Tip for 9/6: You can drive from EVE to Andenes first and do whale watching and / or puffin safari (incl. eagles) at Bleik. Some way to drive but for me it was worth the trip, also the scenic route on Andoya on the way to Bleik and Andenes: https:/…B8ya

And drive carefully: I had coincidently reindeers on the street - beautiful but somehow own-minded in terms of common traffic understanding. I was in their way ;-)

I don't think the Hurtigruten trip from Svolvær to Tromsø makes sense. Yoo will be sailing trough the most scenic parts (Vesterålen) at night, and the leg Harstad - Tromsø (daytime) just cannot compete with your Lofoten experience. So consider flying from Lofoten to Stockholm (via OSL). This will save you a day, which you can use in Lofoten area or Stockholm.

Corrected link to sailing plan:

Normally agree to #8 but at date of travel there is light full night long. Also part around Finnsnes I found very scenic.

It sure is, but one still has to sleep sometimes and they’re still blinded by the beauty Lofoten. Flying out of Lofoten will save them a day which can be used in Stockholm or e.g. driving a loop to Vesterålen
