Melk / Krems

My wife and I will be in Vienna in mid-March. We want to do a one day outing to the Wachau. Is it feasible to take the train to Melk, rent a bike at the train station (again in March), ride to Krems, and take the boat back with the bike?

In the alternative, is it possible to leave the bike in Krems, or must it be brought back to Melk?

March is not a convenient month to bike along the Danube! It can still be winter or at least cold and windy. Ferries commence their service in April. No idea whether you need to return your bikes at the place where you pick them up.

Thank you for the information. And too bad our timing is poor. In the 8 days we will spend in Vienna, I know we can identify many activities. The problem is to limit the list. We were hoping to burn calories while seeing interesting landscapes. Back to the drawing board on that.

Melk Abbey is a great visit and easily reached via train.

www.oebb.at

www.stiftmelk.at

depending on the weather and time of your visit , I would not discount sometime along the Danibe - by bike or other means.

A locsl bus runs almost every hourn beteween Melkj and Krems

www.krems.at

some interseting sights there.

then train back from Krems to Vienna.

www.oebb.at

several choices for bike rentals too- if you visit after March 20 - the Leihradl/ next bike system will be operating-

pick up bike and drop off where you wish . many kiosks in convenient locations for this.

www.leihradl.at

www.nextbike.at

1 euro per hour 5 euro per day

or a rental near to Krems in Mautern - just across the Danube from Krems.

www.rentawachaubike.at

If biking from Melk toward Krems - any wind is usually at your back .

Good bike pathways - great scenery.

March-probably many vintners working in their vineyards - for sure a place to stop for some wine and food too.

Thank you again. One nice thing is that we can plan any of this at the last minute based on the weather.

Hi Vertical ,

The website www.krems.at that you have suggested unfortunately does not have any info regarding direct bus service Krems-Melk

Note the website for oebb given above-

www.oebb.at

this provides bus info

you can also use

www.vvnb.at

line WL1 or WL2 lines

WL1 passes more of the scenic villages and more frequent service.

WL1 runs on north side of the Danube - WL2 on south side.
