Most beautiful towns or villages

Would like to know what everyone thinks, in their opinions, is the most beatiful town or village in Austria.

Also where is the most beautiful scenery to be found?

Very subjective questions but would like to see different opinions.

Very hard question as most people like different things.

Alpbach has often been voted the most beautiful village in Austria.

They have strict building and architectural standards to maintain the character.

Berwang, also in the Tirol, is also very nice summer and winter.

Lanersbach and Finkenberg in the Zillertal - beautiful- still small.

Many on this site seem to like St, Gilgen, St. Wolfgang and Hallstatt.

Dürnstein , overlooking the Danube, with castle ruins above is perfect too.

For me its Maria Alm.I am biased because I have a place there. But it takes a lot of beating.

I have been researching the area around Neustift. Would this rank as a beautiful spot compared to those already mentioned? Is it a busy area (in summer)?

I assume that you refer to Neustift in the Stubai- as other Neustifts in Austria.

A nice place busy summer and winter as near to the Stubai Glacier .

Very nice place , but others , in my opinion nicer.

Thanks vertical. Your suggestion regarding the Zillertal looks like a good option for us and we will follow up on that.

What is your opinion about Halstadt and Muelbach?

I now see your posts and this helps in my opinion.

I enjoy the scenic beauty of Hallstatt- but if you look to tour from there it is less convenient than the towns of St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen. More hiking opportunities from these two places also.

Problem - just too many tourists in Hallstatt- I always think of Disneyworld when there.

However if you come from Swiss and then plan to go to Italian lake country Zillertal is much better located for you and saves much time better spent in the mountains.

I have been in Maria Alm that forms a 3 village place with Muelbach.

Much better with a car there than to rely on public transport.

I prefer winter over summer in this area. many fewer tourists than Hallstatt in summer- nice mountain scenes in winter.

vertical, thanks for your very helpful comments.

A question I raised on another posting - is it necessary to pre-book accommodation for the month of June or is accommodation easy to come by when we arrive in a village or town?

June- no need to pre book- not really high tourist season then.

That is one of the nice things- find a place you like and stay-
