Best Turn-By-Turn Offline GPS? (Cyclades, Greece)

Hi there, I'm an Android user trying to figure out the best GPS app with offline maps and Turn-By-Turn directions for use in Milos, Santorini, and Paros.

I had a good amount of success using Google Maps in Italy last year for walking directions around Florence, Venice, Rome, and Positano. The only issue I had was that Turn-By-Turn directions and business information would not appear until I turned on the data connect for a minute. Once I had turned it on and the data, the turn by turn directions and business info would all load up, and I could turn data off again and follow the directions with voice guidance. This struck me as odd because I had downloaded the maps of the areas I was in ahead of time, and they were displaying properly even without data on. Weird.

Anyway, I'm hoping to find a GPS app that is FULLY offline with business info, turn by turn directions, and so on. I will be buying a Greek sim card so that I do have data, but I'd prefer to have a GPS app that doesn't NEED data to provide real time turn-by-turn directions, just in case we wind up going somewhere without service.

I've looked it up, and the ones I see mentioned are as follows:

1) OsmAnd - https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...…

2) HERE WeGo - https:/…d....here.app.maps

3) Waze - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details…

4) TomTom - https:/…d...m.gplay.navapp

5) Navmii - https:/…d...ndroid.OSM.ALL

6) MAPS.ME - https:/…d...ithme.maps.pro

Does anyone have any experience with these for looking up businesses, and turn-by-turn directions in the Cyclades? I'd really appreciate some feedback on your experiences. While I'm sure I could get around using a paper map, and I will carry one as a backup, having a well functioning turn-by-turn GPS without having to carry a dedicated GPS unit just makes life easier for me. I am sure Google Maps would work about the same as in Italy, but I'd prefer something a bit better if possible.

Thanks!

Waze / google navigation works fine but requires data but doesent use much, you can pre-cache google maps for an area also and then the use will be minimal, and waze when i drove from Stockholm to Hamburg it used about 200 MB data to get the maps and navigation for the distance ...

Best offline GPS i have used is Sygic, not very expensive, avaiable from google play,

On the islands you will probably be just fine without gps navigation , and if used dont follow it to blindly because it can direct you down some roads that arent sutaible

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely look into Sygic. Out of curiosity, have you used other GPS apps besides Google Maps, Waze and Sygic and simply found them to be unsuitable? Just trying to cross apps off the list.

osmand is very good for walking (gpx tracs etc) but not for driving in my experience, tomtom is subscription where as Sygic gives you updates for app and maps for life, rest i haven't used

Thanks @hahnson - I also noticed that Sygic (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details…) mentions it can use TomTom maps too. Wonder if that means there is a way to try TomTom maps outside if the subscription plan or what. Maybe it's just for users who already pay for a subscription? Anyway, thanks again - I'll cross OsmAnd off for driving purposes.

No tomtom makes their own maps and use them for their products and also sells their map data as i understand it. So it might be the same map in both apps. You could maybe use the 7 day free trial to try it,

Personaly i use waze or google maps navigation nowdays as i got free roaming in the EU, Sygic i bought maybe 8 years or so ago (so they are thrue to their promise on free updates so far atleast, ) i have as a backup,
