Piraeus to Athens airport---how much, how long

Hi,

4 adults arriiving in Piraeus on Sat, May 5. How do we find a taxi, how much will it cost to get to the Athens airport and about how long will it take? We have a flight at 10. Also, we need to get out Aegean airline boarding passes before our flight. Thanks, Rose

Is it an arrival on a cruise ferry with a tight timed airport departure or a ferry arrival with a more looese departure ahead?

- A taxi hailed from the road will cost 65 euros appx. and will take appx. 65 minutes, both at daytime.

- You can arrange a taxi transfer on one fo the many offered in the internet but it will be more.

- 4 persons + many luggage means you may need to take a second cab if luggage don't fit one vehicle. That's double cost.

- If arriving on ferry and having some time ahead, you can take the X96 bus that will cost 5 euros per person and will take appx. 70 minutes. This will be a total of 20 euros for the four of you.

- In order to get your Aegean Airlines boarding passes ahead, you 'll have to check in electronically through "web-check-in" and print them. Available at Aegean Airlines site, here: http://en.aegeanair.com/

Reading you want to have your boading passes in hand, i assume you have a tight schedule? In this case booking a cab is the best option, in order to have someone waiting on you at the exact point you 'll be arriving. Google "Athens taxi" for some suggestions.

Thanks for all the good information, Nick. We are arriving on the WindSpirit Cruise ship about 7am. I am assuming we can pick up boarding passes at the airport and hopefully will not have to print them. I don't know if that is an easy process or chaotic!

Do you know if there is a taxi stand near the Cruise terminal where we can count on getting a taxi in the morning? That is what I am imagining since so many cruises come in, but our schedule is tight, although probably ok.

Sat morning traffic and airport delays are my concerns. We will each have a large bag, I think, since our total trip is 22 days. Are they a problem on the buses?

3 hours seemed like such a long time when we booked the tickets!!! Maybe it isn't quite enough.

Is it 3 hours between arriving at the airport and flight take off? This is indeed tight.

You need an hour to reach the airport and being there an hour before. Ship may be sailing in at 7am, still you need sometime for the ship to dock, finish with formalities etc and leave.

Usually, taxis are waiting indeed where cruise ships dock, while Saturday morning traffic will NOT be a problem if we are talking about 7am - 9am. No rush hour on Sat.

Bags are not a problem in buses, racks are offered inside, still if it's 3 hours we are talking about, you will have to take the bullet and get the expensive option fo the taxi. X96 bus is not departing very near to the cruise ships, while you don't wanna really press it that much if we are talking about 3 hours only.

Check in is not a problem at the airport. Pretty manageable airport. If you think it will be tight, print your boarding passes, perhaps using the ships reception help. It's not a big deal and will get you some more time in there.

Wow. If it's three hours or less, that's very tight. You must like to live dangerously! I must ask -- is everything booked? Would you have any options for a later flight?

If you are stuck with this tight connection, plan ahead so you have fewer changes for delays. You will likely have access to computers with an internet connection aboard the cruise ship, so check-in online and print your boarding passes. As Nick said, the airport is quite easy to navigate, but when one is in a rush, every minute counts.

Here's a link to the Athens airport:

http://www.aia.gr

You can view or print airport maps that will help you locate your departure gate, and look under Airport Information>Departures>Check-in, where you'll find the locations of the check-in counters for all airlines.

Hope you have a wonderful trip, and that all does smoothly!

Hey and welcome RoseMarieOhio:-) Disembarking from a cruise and heading to the airport is a popular proceedure witih many folks..albeit a 3 hour spread may be pushing it a bit;-) FWIW, the cruise crews are well aware of this practice and usually can make arrangements for you..they know lots of cabbies..work/have arrangements with them..so not a foreign concept;-) Oftentimes, there are enough folks needing this service and they double up sharing cabs..but in your case, believe one should fit the bill! Contact/email WindSpirit for info on transfers..and EnjoY!

Usually the cruiseships do not arrive in the morning at Piraeus port. They come earlier in the night and people disembark at their own will. Even if the ship arrives at the port at 7am, on a Saturday morning there is no traffic in Piraeus and Athens, so it will take you about 45-60 minutes to get to the airport (50 km distance).

There are taxis at the port, maybe you'll have to wait in line for a while. Since you are 4 persons carrying luggage, maybe it would be better to hire a mini-van via familylimo.gr (more space, no waiting time, they'll greet you at the port).

I hope your ship arrives on time!
