Old Town vs The Strip in June

We've pretty much decided on the Algarve & Albufeira for our holiday next June. It will be the middle of June when we go and based on flights & budget we've narrowed it down to the following hotels..

Tropical Sol Apartments

Vila Petra Aparthotel

Oura-View Beach Club

Alfagar II Aparthotel

It's myself and my boyfriend (mid twenties) going and from the reviews I've read, Albufeira is split into the strip and the old town. I think we'd prefer the old town, we're not the Magaluf/Ibiza clubbing types, just happy to have a few bars open til around 12. I don't know where any of the hotels are in relation to these areas or how far apart they are. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Alfagar is on the new side of town in a quiet area but only approx 10 mins walk to St Eulalia area which is a nice area full of bars & restaurants and not over noisy, once you get to the main area of St Eulalia you can walk to The Strip approx 5 mins away and take or leave it depending on your preferences. We love St Eulalia area because it caters for all ages.

Vila Petra is a lovely 4 star place situated at the top end of the strip but out of the noise of it. the top half of the strip is more family orientated than the other two parts. Approx 20 mins walk to old town or €4 in a taxi.

Oura View Beach Club again is also on new side of town, in a great position on Oura beach, approx again 20 mins walk to old town, or 10 mins to St Eulalia area.

Tropical Sol is inbetween old and new town, near the worms roundabout, Ideal for visiting both areas, quite a nice area with some good bars to go at, all uphill though to old town approx again 20 mins via the escalators to the beach.

None of the places mentioned in the original post are particularly near the old town. Tropical Sol is the closest, but still a good 20 minutes walk, a 4 / 5 Euro taxi ride or €1,40 on the bus, no direct buses there and last bus back 2320.

Alfagar is over two miles from the old town.

Most bars here stay open until 2am if there are customers.

Nearer the old town are Brisa Sol and Villa Gale, have a look at them, plenty of old town apartments for private rental too, check out the Owners Direct website to get an idea of whats on offer.

In the old town itself you have choice of Rocamar, directly looking above the beach on the cliffs.

Vila Sao Vicente, just higher up than Rocamar, hotelsaovicentealbufeira.com/…

Sol E Mar, directly on the beach, every room has an ocean view, no outdoor pool though but an indoor one.

non of the above are self catering, just room only.

For self catering look at Brisa Sol http://www.hotelbrisasol.com/ T/A reviews: tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g189112-d2641…

Turial Park Apartments are 25 metres from fishermans beach, believe they are basic though.

Try the Alma in albufeira very reasonable and very close to beach, shops and restaurants and local tram that goes between strip and old town.

I have spent 3 holidays in Albufeira, One at the strip.Sorry cant remember the name as it was a long time ago Which we found to be the most commercial area, with little local atmosphere, could have been anywhere, more suited to the younger element, lots of bars, restaurants Burger bar's.Plenty of entertainment, open late.

The second visit we stayed at al Jardim, a self catering accomadation situated about midway beween the Old Town and the Srip about 5-10 minute walk downhill to the Old Town past lots of small old cafes with beautiful sardines, Tuna and fresh salads. We liked this area, hired a car very reasonable and used it as a base drove to Seville in Spain, lots of history, took an open topped bus tour with english commentary, It

showed where Christopher Columbus waited 3 years before getting go ahead to search for the Americas and a secure tower where all the gold and silver looted from the natives in South America were secured, The cigar factory shown in the Opera Carmen, Had Tapas in the oldest Tapas bar, then returned from a very interesting day out.

In every visit we seem to spend lot's of time in the Old Town, which we found to be the most quaint, and full of atmosphere, good shops and the friendliest Portuguese people so in Nov 2013 we booked a week at the Sol e Mar hotel a 4 star hotel in the centre of town right over the beach, with fabulous views of the coast, next to the Tunnel to the beach it was 5 minutes from the main square surrounded by very good bars and Excellent restaurants (see my reviews) The hotel needed a little T L C But was very good and superb value. We had B & B which was lovely and enough that we did not need lunch.

Regarding buses at Tropical Sol .... the VERDE (Green) route goes to Old Town at Escalators from the stop just 100 yards away at Worms roundabout, a circuitous route maybe, but only 15 mins ... this is a good quiet area and there`s a Pingo Doce s/market at the roundabout too. If you walk around 400 yards the other way to Tres Palmeiras roundabout, the little road train and the Green Giro route also stop there. If you get a pre-paid card (one for the two of you) it only costs around 95 cents each trip instead of 1.40.

Tropical Sol puts you right in the middle of everything ... a 10min walk or 2 min bus ride (Blue or Red 2) to the central shopping area and Town centre ... a 10 min stroll to strip the other way. Coming back from Old Town, you can get Red 2 at Liberdade terminal to Strip, or either Blue or Green at the former Chinese stop on Rua Alves Correia (both streets start at the famous garden square) ... the latter routes run opposite to each other in the East end. Each ticket last an hour and you can change Giro buses anywhere ...

For a wider brows of hotels and restaurants, plus STREETVIEW, look at

www.albufeiraguide.yolasite.com and you`ll find plenty of reviews for them all on TA.
