old town or marina?

I'm looking to stay in Albuferia in June/July but undecided whether to stay in Old town or marina. Would like to be near restaurants and bars but in a more peaceful location.

Any advice appreciated including hotel or apartment names.

Sorry, as we don't stay in either the Old Town or the Marina, I can't help you on this one.

The Marina is still quite "new" in terms of restaurants, there are only 3 or 4 open in high season and apart from those it is just a few shops and craft and jewellery stalls in summer, although it is lovely to sit at and stroll around. There is more choice in the old town, maybe go for somewhere inbetween so you can walk to both, are you hiring a car?? I can recommend some lovely restaurants in nearby Gale, Sesmarias, Sao Rafael area?

The marina is certainly quiet with only a few restaurants and bars and the only activity really being that generated from the boat companies offering trips etc. So quiet in fact that the tourist train no longer goes there.

Albuferia itself consists old town and certain newer areas to the east such as Oura, Areias da Sao Joao and Montochore, which are all close to the strip with its bars and restaurants etc.

You could located somewhere in the middle where you would have about a fifteen minute walk to either. Old town has a lovely square with cafe bars and restaurants that really come alive at nighttime in high season. Google the Paraiso or the Brisa Sol Aparthotels which are within this location.

Nearer to the the newer areas/the strip is a new complex called Corcovada, up by the globe roundabout, which is only a five minute walk to the middle of the strip, where the tourist train to oldtown is located, and ten minute walk to Oura Beach. The immediate area is quiet yet within a few minutes walking distance of all the action, bars, retaurants, beach etc. This complex consists of one, two, three bedroomed apartments and also villas. For this you could google the Corcovadasun site, which provides listing for owners, including contact numbers in UK/Ireland.

The marina is definitely quiet! But it is only a 12 - 15 minute walk into the old town (one medium sized hill involved)which would make it a reasonable choice from that respect. Nearest beach to the Marina is about 3/4 the way along that road.

The Old Town is busy and busier as July goes on. But if you coming in June I would say Brisa Sol etc would be a good choice.

If you stay in the old town a car is only necessary if you plan to make a number of trips to other towns and villages. Everything (including beaches) is within 10 - 15 minutes walk and most of it is pedestrians only in any case.

Hiya,

I was like you last year and couldnt decide where to stay and opted for the Vila Channa in Sao Rafael just outside Albufeira. It was lovely and peaceful in the day and the beach we went to was gorgeous. In the evenings we got a taxi into the Old town and had a meal and a few drinks but lookIng back id wished we had stayed nearer to the Old Town or the strip. We have just booked the Tropical Sol in May and have read great reviews about the place. Have you any apartments in mind?

The old town is brilliant both day and night and if you want something a bit more stupid its only a few euros up to the strip

The Marina is certainly more peaceful and as Cubsur says it is very easy to get to the Old Town from there.

There is a fantastic new complex of self-catering apartments between the two places called Encosta da Orada. Algarve Getaways has a number of them listed or Google the complex.

It is a 10 minute walk to both the Old Town and the Marina. The complex is very quiet with pretty tropical gardens, swimming pools with waterfalls and tennis courts. Many of the apartments have panoramic sea and coastal views over the Marina.

Right inside or nearer the Old Town, many of the properties are much older and can be very noisy all year round except winter.
