Casa da Fonte on the steps by the beach tunnel. Lovely rear courtyard all set under a lemon tree & vine.

Just opposite there the Casa Del Mar with its big glass window on the Peneco beach .. or the upper terrace of A Ruina ...

O Catraio. Heading from the tunnel, stay on the left and it is just after the street narrows. Or C19 - at the end of Avenida do Liberdade where the cars loop around. A Ruina is very expensive. Avoid Zansi, it's very poor. The boss at Il Brigante has a dim view of British people.

Thank you for your replies. In the 10 years we have been coming out there we have never had dinner in the old town as we stay in Sesmarias/ Gale/ Sao Rafael areas the furthest we have been is Castelo de Mar and Luau. So we wanted some recommendations from you all and knew to stay away from the main square too.

Agree with recommendation for both Casa da Fonte and C19. Both good food. Casa da Fonte is such a lovely setting and food is good. Nice bar also. C19 really good value, very fresh food and the home-made chips are fab. Another nice place is 3 crowns. A bit of a climb but lovely views and also good food.

Stick to what you know round Gale etc. Far better than going into town

Don’t worry Stephen we’ll still be visiting all the great restaurants in the area! There’s so many good ones, we just wanted to go into old town one evening.

Yummy - the thought of Dom Dimis, Praia Grande, and even Coehla No2 (Nelsons), all make my mouth water, and all in the area you stay.

Used to go to O' Manjar in old town, which was absolutely fantastic, but unfortunately had to turn into a snack bar due to the poor health of a family member.

Have tried Shalloms which is on the walk in from the 'old' bus station, and the food is very reasonable. Also this year we tried Bistro restaurant which is just off the square leading up to the Geordie Bar - Very nice food, and service.

Enjoy
