Off the beaten path in August in Portugal?

My wife and I will be in Portugal for a few days in August (2nd week), so could someone suggest some beautiful, natural and uncrowded places to go to? We love natural beauty and simple living, so anywhere with secluded beaches, hills or forests and small towns/villages would be perfect for us.

Would love to hear from some of you more experienced travellers.

And you'll be flying to where, Lisboa? Will you have a car or are you relying on public transports?

For your requirements you'll need a car. If you like you could check out the Schist villages: http://www.aldeiasdoxisto.pt/
