Best Places to Visit in Portugal

Hi all,

We are planning to visit Portugal in May 2012 after spending 3 weeks in Spain. We will arrive in Lisbon and intend to visit Sintra but cannot decide on another place to visit for a few days. Maybe Porto - although we are not really into port wines particularly. Obidos sounds quaint and may suit. Is there somewhere that people here have been that they loved? Thanks

Fortunately Porto is more than port-wine. Worth visiting and from there, take the train or bus to Guimaraes (2012 cultuaral capital of Europe), Braga and a journey into the Douro valley. Beautiful scenery and lovely villages.

Hope this helps.

Yes, we loved Porto! Not only for its excellent portwines but it's also a very pretty city, rundown in some parts, but still with a lot of charm and character. We also loved our drive into the Douro Valley. Such beautiful scenery, so very peaceful ...

Sintra was nice, too, if you are into palaces and gardens. We also visited Lisbon, great city but very crowded and hectic while we were there.

We still have to explore Braga, Guimarães, Évora, Óbidos ... which we will do next year in June. I'm so looking forward to go back to Portugal.

Hi Cb Bear,

We were in Portugal last month and loved Porto, it is more than just port wines as the previous reviews say.We stayed at the Mercure Port Centro which is very central as the name states. It is a 3hr train ride from Lisbon. We also went out to Evora and was not that impressed after a 3 hr train trip. Sintra is a definate must see.

Enjoy your trip and we found it much cheaper than Spain

Thank you everyone for your great advice. We have decided on Porto and have booked for two nights so we can have a good look around. It seems like everyone loves Porto and that it has a lot to offer. Now we just have to wait 6 months for our adventures to begin!!

Thanks CB

Hi CbBear,

I will be visiting Potugal next month and was wondering, since you have now been, what your recommendations are. We will be driving in from Northern Spain. Where should we go?

@ Stacee7

We just drove in from Salamanca two days ago and stayed at a wonderful rustic place called Quinta Santa Isabel just outside Chaves. Chaves is so-so but where we stayed was gorgeous. No one has reviewed it in tripadvisor yet but I intend to as soon as I figure out how to add a new location. We were the only guests and stayed in an ancient wood stove-heated cabin. The wonderful woman that took care of us, Mrs.Adozinda, hung a fresh load of bread from our door knob each morning. You can find info at http://www.quintadesantaisabel.com.pt/ The place is hard to find but worth it. Be sure to get directions.

I've been to melgaco it's beautiful! There is a castle there that from the top you can look out and see the river separating Spain and Portugal! Vianna do Castello is home to Santa Lucia which is a beautiful old cathedral located up on a mountain the view from up there is breathe taking!
