Best city in Portugal

Planning a birthday trip for my boyfriend in January we are wondering which city in Portugal would best suit a couple in mid 20’s.We will be booking a bed & breakfast accommodation so we’re mostly interested in decent restaurants, clubs and bars mainly night life,he also likes the beach

Thank you

X

Reena - just that usually when "beach" is mentioned, one assumes more than just "viewing" it! We are not generally "beach" people either, but like to see them.

You haven't given any other details, such as budget, length of stay, which airport you prefer to fly into, means of transportation, etc, all of which could help in answers for you. Otherwise, of course the main 2 cities, Lisbon & Porto, would meet your stated needs of restaurants, clubs & bars.

Reena - so you've probably got the time to actually see both Lisbon & Porto & then you will have a comparison too! Train booked in advance would be your easiest & most reasonable option (from other comments, as we have not done this ourselves), then no car rental required. Maybe flying into one city (suggest Lisbon first, personally), then back from the other, called an open-jaw ticket, would work well & save you some time.

I'm not an expert, certainly not about the beaches, but maybe you could give that a pass anyway for a January trip. Otherwise, I googled & thought this site had well-organized info:

ps - not sure where you heard that taxis are expensive. I think generally considered not so in Lisbon, likely similar in Porto, but both have excellent Metro & buses anyway.

both cities have what you are looking for in my opinion apart from beaches which you'll have to use public transport to get to and if the weather favours you there are some nice beaches to walk along not far from lisbon or porto however i would choose lisbon as it has less probability of rain.
