First trip to Portugal March 2019

Hi,

My friend and i will be making our first trip to Portugal beginning of March next year. We have booked our flights and have booked a cancellation hotel in Praia Da Rocha. However i have learnt that being off season this location would probably not be the best choice. We are looking for a nice beach location, with a lively vibe, restaurants and pubs. Is Praia Da Rocha a good choice for this?

Also what is the weather like in March please.

The weather can be fairly nice, sometimes even warm enough for sunbathing. But there's a good chance of rain and, when it doesn't rain, nights can be chilly. The sea temperature will be unpleasant unless you're the hardy type. Praia da Rocha is basically a resort, although very close to Portimão which is a real town. Like ptnov64, I would recommend you choose accommodation in a town like those mentioned.

Praia da Rocha is about 2 kms from Portimao can walk in, plenty restaurants and shops train station in Portimao can travel further. . Also can get bus to Alvor 7kms. Expect to be quiet in March, but high rise purpose built resort, buzzing in summer. Can't think what would do if weather bad though.

I stayed near Tavira March 2017 and 2018. It’s usually less windy and warmer than the western end of the Algarve.

Last March, we managed a few days on the beach, but it was barely warm enough. This year, there was a cold wind blowing, so we went for beach walks rather than sun bathing. It was much wetter this year too. A few days were warm enough for just tshirts and shorts, but we wore fleeces most days. It’s colder at night.

In March, we found that most of the tourists were pensioners seeking to escape the grotty Northern European winters. Lots of Canadian pensioners too.

If you want good weather in March, head to the Canaries.

Hi,

Thank you for the help. We have decided on Albufeira, Can anyone recommend the best hotels, and whether it is best to stay near the strip or the old town. Currently considering the Santa Eulalia Hotel.

The last March was awful. Permanent heavy rain, strong winds and clouds.
