Private tours

We will be staying in Antwerp and are planning a day trip to Bruges. Are there any private guides available. We would like to do a Flanders Fields tour but are not sure we could get to Bruges early enough for a group tour.

It might be worth contacting Quasimodo Tours. I did a tour with them a few years back and I remember them doing a pick up at the station - they also dropped people off at the station after the tour.

There is no sense in going to Brugge to pick up a Flanders Field tour there - Brugge is still an hour away from Ieper by road. There is an hourly through train from Antwerpen Centraal to Ieper, it still takes just over 2 hours though. It would probably be possible to visit the In Flanders Fields museum AND have an afternoon tour of a few "battlefield" sights but it would be a long day out.

Whilst we have not used their services in Bruges, we have used Tours by Locals in both Japan and Chile. From the enclosed link there appears to be two or three options from Bruges that might suit you. I could not see any tours direct from Antwerp.

Your question might imply that you think the expression "Flanders Fields" have something to do with Brugge. It doesn't (Brugge may be in Flanders - but so is Antwerp), and although there are tours from there, there are far more from Ieper itself, so if starting from Antwerp, it would make sense to go straight to Ieper as recommended by becasse - Brugge is not even on the way between Antwerp and Ieper!

You also need to decide exactly what you mean. As a literary reference, "Flanders Fields" can now refer to any or possibly all of the following:

1. the "In Flanders Fields" museum in Ieper (http://www.inflandersfields.be/);

2. the "Flanders Fields" American cemetery in Waregem, near Ieper

3. WWI battlefields and cemeteries around Ieper, such as Tyne Cot (the largest British and Commonwealth cemetery), which is at Zonnebeke - near Ieper (visitflanders.com/en/themes/flanders_fields/); or

4. a tour (of the area referred to in 3.) which has "Flanders Fields" in its title, or by a tour company with "Flanders Fields" in its name. Such tours depart from:

- Brussels, from March, on Thurs and Sun (http://www.brussels-city-tours.com/en/tour/in-flanders-fields-the-great-war - https://www.viator.com/tours/Brussels/World-War-I-Battlefields-Tour-of-Flanders-from-Brussels/d458-2200FLANDERS),

- Brugge (e.g. http://www.quasimodo.be/battlefield-tour.php); and

- Ieper (e.g. http://www.salienttours.be/ - http://www.overthetoptours.be/about.htm - https:/…short-tour.html - http://www.2xplore.be/practical%20info.html).

Private tours, on the other hand, can depart from anywhere but particularly Ieper, and you will find that many of the same companies that offer organised tours also do bespoke (private) ones. See also belgium-tour-guide.com/excursion-in-ypres-t-… and toerisme-ieper.be/en/page/383-414/private-ba…

If you only want to visit the IFF Museum, Menin Gate etc., you can just take a train to Ieper and visit these on your own. But you can also take an organised tour from Ieper starting at 9 a.m (2xplore) or 09:30 hrs (Flanders Battlefield Tours), taking the train from Antwerpen-Centraal at 06:47, arr. 08:41 hrs; or at 10:00 hrs (Salient Tours), departing at 07:47 and arriving at 09:41). And you can return to Antwerp by train after the Last Post ceremony which takes place at the Menin Gate at 20:00 hrs, e.g. at 21:18 arr. 22:23 and 22:18 arr. 00:23.
