Driving from Bruges to Amsterdam

We are traveling with family ( 2 kids) to London and flying from Amsterdam, decided to take a Eurostar to Brussels and have 1.5 -2 days to spend in Belgium before going to Keukenhof. We really wanted to see Bruges, but it seems to a lot of transfers to get from Bruges to Keukenhof , so it looks like we have 2 options, stay in Brussels and take a day trip going to Bruges and then take a train to Amsterdam, or staying in Bruges and renting a car from there to go to Keukenhof. Can you please advise what would be better option.

If you hire a car in Bruges you will have to return it to Bruges. You won't be able to return it in Amsterdam unless you find a company that does one way hire from one country (Belgium) to a different country (Netherlands).

As regards train journeys, if I have understood what you want to do, I don't think it's much more complicated to travel:

- London-Brussels-Brugge on day 1 (stay in Brugge for nights 1 and 2) and then Brugge-Antwerp-Amsterdam (or Schiphol) on day 3, rather than

- London-Brussels on day 1 (night 1 in Bxl), Brussels-Brugge-Brussels on day 2 (night 2 in Bxl) and then Brussels-Amsterdam (or Schiphol) on day 3.

In the second case, in particular if you stay near Bruxelles-Midi station, you do minimise dragging luggage around, but of course there is no "better" option in objective terms, only what YOU would prefer to do, and that is entirely for you to decide!.

As regards hiring a car, I think it's highly unlikely that any car-hire company would not let you drop it off in the Netherlands, but you would certainly pay a high premium for one-way hire.

One of the places from which Keukenhof runs buses is Schiphol Airport, and as this is a stop on the railway line from Brussels and Antwerp, located between Rotterdam and Amsterdam, you might want to consider staying there rather than in Amsterdam itself. The station is right below the airport, there are hotels at the airport (the Sheraton being nearest the station) or which run shuttles to/from the airport (see http://www.amsterdamtips.com/tips/amsterdam-schiphol-airport-hotels.php), the Keukenhof bus departs from and returns to Schiphol Plaza, and you can travel into Amsterdam from the airport station in about 15 mins, and then you are also "on the spot" for your flight home, rather than having to travel out to the airport from central Amsterdam.
