Bicycling to Marken

Hello! Will be in Amsterdam next week for 4 days and keeping a close eye on the weather. Is biking to volendam and Marken a reasonable thing to do, or is it best to rent a car because of the weather?

Thanks!

If wind force is below 4 and temp above 20, do bike!

A round trip Amsterdam - Marken - Volendam - Marken will be around 50km. For me it would be a reasonable and easy thing to do. You are the only one who can decide whether or not it would be reasonable for you.

A return trip from Amsterdam is too far for anyone who's not an avid cyclist.

<A round trip Amsterdam - Marken - Volendam - Marken>

I meant of course: Amsterdam - Marken - Volendam - Amsterdam

I agree with ASW33, if your not an avid cyclist that round trip is probably too much

Thanks! If it's not raining I think we'll go for it.

Make sure to pick a nice route through Waterland and allow time for it, it might end up being more memorable than Marken. I'd completely skip Volendam, if you want to see a nice town stop in Monnickendam instead. Avoid cycling along the N247 as much as you can.

ASW33 Thank you for the advice! I speak Dutch, so signs should be easy to follow?

Really looking forward to this!

Thanks again

The area is fairly easy to navigate it's almost impossible to get lost you can just bring google maps or similar as back up. Signs will have names of villages /towns on it so language shouldn't make much difference. On Marken go to the lighthouse too on the end of the island and visit one of the tiny villages like rozenwerf.

a bike routeplanner: https://routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl

As you speak Dutch... look under "Meer opties". There you can choose the type of route (shortest, via junctions, via nature, ...)

besides the normal signs (with names of villages on them) you'll also see signs with numbers of the numbered junction system. These will usually lead you via more scenic routes:
