Visiting over Christmas and new years

We are travelling as a family of 4 (2 girls aged 9,10) to Groningen arriving the 21/12/15. We are visiting family and staying in a rental house for 3 weeks. We will be fairly busy the first week but are really look for things to do, we can do in a daytrip, from the 2nd to the 11th of Jan. Any advice?

Leeuwarden, and Zwolle, are not that far away and easy as a day trip

1) Hindelopen, an old Zuiderzee port,

2) One of the Waddenzee Islands (Schermonickoog and Ameland are both quite close).

3) The old fortress town of Bourtange

While you are in Groningen try a visit to the new 3D Dome Theatre (Infoversum). 3D full dome theatres are still very rare in Europe, so it worth a visit. Some of their shows are in English (normally ion Tuesdays). See www.infoversum.nl
