Drive or Take the train (Zurich and Lugano)

We are planning on going from Zurich to Lugano with a half day stopover in Lucerne in the morning. We will stay 2 nights in Lugano and then return to Zurich to fly back to London.

We are family of four (2 kids ages 6 and 8).

1) Will it be more convenient to rent a car from Zurich or just take the public transport.

2) Any suggestions for a good hotel in Zurich and Lugano for a family ? ( mod to expensive)

thanks in advance for any suggestions

Take the train. Its so much more relaxing and enjoyable, particularly travelling through the scenic Gotthard Pass. Direct trains to Lucerne from Zurich take about an hour. There are then direct trains from Lucerne to Lugano which take 2½ hours.

You can times at:- www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

Will you also be visiting the Bernese Oberland? If so you may wish to look at getting a pass to save money. Your children will also travel free with an STS pass.

Although I have not stayed there the Hotel Splendide Royal may well fit the bill.
