Pulling up the train timetable between Rome and Paris through Switzerland at night, you have a few choices. One route goes through Switzerland with 3 intermediate changes, all during the small hours, making sure your will be up and about changing platforms every hour, and look at the beautiful natural scenery in the dark. Others involves spending the night in some smaller stations in France. It is for you to define your level of economy and comfort, vs your reason for doing it.

Fast trains cost more, but slow trains take up daylight hours. So there is not much time left from your 3 days to see much.

If your interest is to study trains, then this is not a bad idea, as you will have a variety. Fast train, swinging train, regular or narrow gauge, rack rail and metro.
