from zurich to grindelwald

Would some kind person be able to help.

Leaving zurich 06/10, staying in Grindelwald for 3 days. What train do we catch from zurich to grindelwald, do we have to change trains or do we bus it, (i don't understand train timetable)Want to leave zurich as early as we can. How long does this trip take. What is the best rail pass to get, as we travel then to Austria for couple days, then off to Rome for few weeks.

Know this isn't the site but has someone been to Dubai if so recommend a med priced, non smoking, clean hotel. Thanks

It takes 2hrs 45 minutes by train from Zuerich main station to Grindelwald.

There are frequent trains. Some are direct to Interlaken Ost, other srequire a change in Bern.

I find the website of the German "Deutsche Bundesbahn" (www.bah.de) the most useful. They'll give you the major trains, which you would want to take anyhow. You will find access to the English version by clicking "Englisch" in the upper left hand quadrant, below "Suchen".

As to which ticket, it depends on from where you will be arriving in Zuerich. For exmple, if you are flying into Zuerich and going from the airport directly to Grindelwald (on www.bahn.de enter Zuerich Flughafen), then you may want to buy a Swiss Card. It gives you a free ride from Zuerich to Grindelwald, and a free ride from Grindelwald to the Austrian border. In G. it will, give you heavily discounted tickets for wherever you want to go there.

Otherwise, you may just want to buy a Berner Oberland card for the days you are staying in G.

From what you tell us, basically you are better off buying point-to- point tickets (with or without th Swiss card) to go from Switzerland (or the Austrian border) to wherever you go in Austria, and then from Austria to Rome rather than some version of the EURAIL pass.

There are direct train from Zurich to Interlaken Ost where you need to change trains to Grindelwald as there is a change in gauge from standard to metre gauge. Trains to Grindelwald run in multiple with those to Lauterbrunnen, the train divides at Zweilutschinen so make sure you sit in the correct section.

If you're are only there for a short visit a pass may not be the best option.

Swiss train times are on www.rail.ch

After you collect your baggage at the airport just walk downstairs to the train station and ask the attendant at the counter where and when to catch the train to Grindelwald. If you're going to be training through Europe it would GREATLY behoove you to learn to read a train schedule. It's really not that difficult. Rest assured the attendants at the Swiss stations are friendly and helpful.

Ifr you fly with Swiss, this airline displays the trains schedules on the screens prior to landing; if you miss that, there are plenty of screens everywhere at the airport in the arrival section from where you can see all train departures.

Please note: on the screen it reads only Interlaken, but all trains go to Interlaken Ost as well.

At arrival, just follow the signs RAILWAY, it's impossible to miss.

Enjoy!

You can also go via Lucerne. It is a little slower but much more scenic as well as somewhat cheaper. We did it both ways recently and much preferred the Lucerne route.
