Early June Hiking - gear to bring?

Trying to travel light on an extended European tour, but I don't want to miss out on hiking b/c of not having gear. We're going to be in the Jungfrau for a week in the first half of June and would like to do several hikes (1-5 miles, max about 800 meters elevation gain).

How cold do we need to be prepared for with day hikes? Definitely bringing rain pants which help with warmth, and will have light gloves, warm jackets, but torn on taking a polypro fleece pant or not.

Also would Yaktrax be helpful? Are trails just closed if there is still snow, or are there hikes where there would be melting some icey spots where traction could be handy to have? Are these (or similar) items widely available for sale in say Wengen?

The weather seems to be warming early this year so early June shouldn't have too much trouble as far as dealing with snow. For what to wear I would just go with things you can layer to put on or take off as conditions change. Normally regular hiking boots provide plenty of traction for most hikes in the area. And yes each village in the area has at least one sporting goods store that is well equipped for almost any hiking need.

I was reading an article in one of the free newspapers on the train this evening which was saying that some of the road passes (Klausen, Susten) would be opening a full month later than last year... the Susten will not open until mid-June. So at altitude (let's say above 2,000 metres) there is still a lot of snow, with more forecast over the next four or five days.

I get the impression that the summer hiking season will be starting late this year above about 1500, whereas lower down it has started early because of the warm weather.

You don't need fleece pants, the rain pants will work just fine. An Neuch notes, you likely won't be able to get to the higher elevation hikes (where it is coldest) in early June anyway.

To state the obvious, make sure you also have a rain-proof shell, preferably with a hood
