Day trip to Jungfrau from Interlaken

Hi, I am visiting Lausanne, Switzerland in June and from there would like to visit the Jungfrau. It seems that Interlaken is the place to base ourselves to make the trip. Have looked at the train timetables with a view to booking everything before leaving Australia, but it all seems a bit confusing. Can someone advise me if I need to prebook trains or can one purchase on the day? Or are there any group tours that can be booked?

Would appreciate any advice.

Hi Annabel,

It's unclear from your post if you want to visit the overall region or go up the Jungfraujoch (the high peak). I'm assuming the latter.

The Bernese Oberland is one of the most stunning areas (if not THE most) of Switzerland. I strongly suggest you spend at least a few days in the area.

There are many possible bases in the region, most lovely are the car-less villages of Wengen or Mürren. Wengen is the best base for a Jungfraujoch ascent. Interlaken is a rather large town, full of tour groups and buses, retail, casinos, etc. It is not in the mountains. Not the best pick unless you are into lots of shopping and nightlife and willing to forgo the picturesque villages and staying in the Alps. Which, to my way of thinking, is the reason one goes to Switzerland to begin with. We can all visit casinos, shopping, nightlife, and lots of crowds in lots of uninteresting cities all over the planet.

You should never pre-book a train up the Jungfraujoch. The trip is entirely weather dependent. If the day is foggy or cloudy you shouldn't go because you will spend lots of money and time and see nothing. This is another reason to spend a few days in the area so you are not running in and out from Lausanne (lots of train time) with the hope of your one day there to be able to make the ascent. Plus there are so many wonderful things to do and see in the area it is well worth spending several days (or weeks or even months!)

If the weather permits a Jungfraujoch ascent, you can easily just walk up to the ticket counter and buy a ticket on the next train up.Also, there is no reason to book a tour, it is very easy to do yourself.

Great advice from Kimsanjose

I stayed in the area for 7 nights two years ago and had a wonderful time. See the weather from your window in the morning: if it´s clouded or foggy do not go up because you will see nothing from up there.

Thank you so much for your reply Kimsandjose, this answers my questions.

We will certainly now stay at one of the villages you suggest rather than Interlaken, and hope we get a good day to go to the top of the Jungfrau.

Thanks again for your advice.

Anne

Hi Annabel, I am not an expert but after lots of researching have a reasonable idea on where to go, by the way I will also be there in June.

We are not going to pre-book anything, I am reasonably confident that at that time of year we will find suitable accomodation.

We are nudging 50 so we aren't backpackers but will head to Grindelwald to see if that suits our needs, it appears to be a bit more lively than Muerren and Wengen and more scenic than Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald also has good access to Jungfraujoch via K.S, we then can walk back from K.S to Mannlichen, a spectacular, easy walk by all reports. Trains leave Interlaken OST every thirty minutes and takes about thirty minutes to get to Grindelwald, if we get there and don't like it or can't find accomodation we still have time to move on...Lauterbrunnen would be my next choice although I am still tempted to have one night in Muerren or Wengen.

I hope you enjoy your trip, if it is your first trip to Switzerland I am sure it will live up to you expectations, it is an amazing country!

thank you for the great advice. I was thinking that I might need to lock everything in and have everything pre booked, but it seems it might be better to take things as they come! Really looking forward to it, it will be my first trip to Switzerland. Hope you have a great time too!
