Confused

Hi, A family of four traveling from Varenna Lake Como via Tirano on the Bernina. We have three nights prior to having to be in Zürich for the fourth night. Then we are a family of three and travel to Montreux. Stay Montreux For two nights? Fly out of Geneva. We enjoy doing everything- all adults go along get along . Can’t decide where to stay three nights prior to Zürich?? Lucerne, Interlaken, towns near train stations to make it convenient base? Of course want to do Pilate. The must sees as never know if we can get back. This is the second week of June 2018. Also recommendations for hotels. Would like 4-5 star. Thank you all in advance.

Have a look at some map. Especially zoomable railway map for Switzerland at https://maps.trafimage.ch/

Varenna to Tirano is in Italy, check for local trains to Tirano. Bernina Express (assuming you mean the train) leads from Tirano to Chur. Different routes from Chur to Lucerne - via part of Glacier Express, Andermatt to Göschenen, from there to Lucerne; or via Sargans, change for Voralpen-Express at Pfäffikon SZ, slow, partially scenic direct train to Lucerne. Also possible is St.Moritz to Zermatt with Glacier Express, then Zermatt to Zurich. Where to stay and how long depends mainly on what your are interested in.

Zurich to Montreux can be done via Lausanne - fast, not the most scenic route. Or via Golden Pass line - Lucerne to Interlaken for a first section, Interlaken to Montreux (with some train changes, construction for the moment) for the second part. Here again plenty to see, do, experience - define your priorities.

Just travelling through the beautiful Engadin St. Moritz area would be a shame - you would certainly regret doing so and seeing the wonderful scenery just through a train window. Plan some days in the area before traveling to e.g. Luzern or Zermatt.

There are plenty 4 and 5 star hotels here (almost the greatest density of 5-star hotels in the Alps). However second week of June, not all of them will be open. This is wonderful time, not crowded but most of the services and mountain cablecars open again for the summer season. With two and more night stay, most of the hotels would offer you a complimentary pass for mountain cablecars, many of them also the whole local public transport, see …stmoritz.ch/sommer/en/bergbahnen-inclusive/

For more about the area see https://www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/sommer/en/ and for the area you are seeing from the Bernina line see https://www.bernina-glaciers.ch/en/ . The part Tirano to St. Moritz is actually the original Bernina Express line, the part to Chur is an extension on the same tracks as the regular Albula trains and also the Glacier Express use.

4. Re: Confused

Rethinking some plans. Although still confused. We want to take the train from Tirano through Saint Moritz and Chur. Arriving in Milano for one night then 3 nights in Varenna, Italy leaving on Wednesday, June 13. One daughter must leave on sat June 17 from Zurich . After dropping off one daughter, will be three of us for another three days prior to flying out of Geneva on wed. I believe we should do the last night in Zürich as daughter‘s flight leaves at 11:45 AM. That gives us three nights prior to Zürich. Should we spend all three nights in Lucerne? I’m concerned about not seen enough of iconic smaller Swiss towns with all four of us. We want to see Mount Pilatus or do another cog trip, And the golden pass train route from Zürich appeals to us. But where to go for three nights prior to Geneva? Thank you all agin in advance. Also a lot of hotels are not available.
