Traveling from Florence to Pisa by Train

Hi All,

We (family of 4) are arriving in Florence around 11:30am on July 27 and planning to take a train from Santa Maria Novella station to Pisa Centrale around 2:30pm. We have booked 5:30 pm slot for Pisa Tower.

My questions are

1) Do I need to book in advance or simply by at the train station.

2) In evening, we are planning to take train back to Florence by 8:30ish or 9:00pm - Do I need to buy in advance or buy at the station.. There are only two trains after 9:00pm ( 9:32pm and 10:32pm) so want to be cautious to ensure that we can get in.

3) In the evening - do train gets crowded and we may not be able to get in or get a seat?

Appreciate you help. Thank so you so much in advance.

1) You can't "book". You can buy tickets in advance if you want to, but these are R trains so you can't reserve seats and it is better to buy on the spot (validating the ticket before you get on the train concerned).

2) Ditto. And in any case, as it's not possible to reserve for specific departures, the train company can't know how many people will be travelling on each departure. You'll certainly be able to get on whichever of those you want, even if you couldn't find a seat.

3) Who knows? It depends on how many people are returning from Pisa at the same time as you! Though I wouldn't expect trains to be too crowded at the times given. At all events, no-one else can reserve either!

This is a local train with no reserved seats; we just bought tickets at the newsstand in the station or you can get them from machines.

Travelling on regional trains, validate your train ticket before boarding in the validation box.

We are doing the same train trip from Florence to Pisa in December, hopefully the weather cooperates!

Do we need to buy tickets to simply take pictures of the outside of the Leaning tower? Is there a "compound' to enter with a fee or is the ticket only to go inside and climb the tower?

No, you don't need to buy tickets to take photos of the tower, you don't have to pay anything.
